Making Religious Conversion

Abstract:

Tématem práce je náboženská konverze s ohledem na vnější procesy, které ji provázejí a bez kterých by nebylo možné její úspěšné provedení. Práce bude danou problematiku reflektovat na případu judaismu. Při konverzi neprobíhají změny pouze na úrovni jedince, ale dochází také k proměně vztahů s okolím, je tedy především událostí sociální. Jedinec se nepřipojuje pouze k nové víře, ale také vstupuje do nové skupiny, které se musí přizpůsobit, do které je nějakým způsobem přijímán. Úkolem práce je tedy popsat procesy, které se dějí prostřednictvím sociálních interakcí, na kterých je závislá subjektivní realita konvertity a prostřednictvím nich je následně také udržována. V případě židovství mají náboženská pravidla a přikázání přímý vliv na každodenní realitu jedince a ovlivňují praktický život a rutinní záležitosti. V judaismu je konverze stále předmětem diskuze, často i napětí, od toho se odvíjí, jak je konvertita vnímán a přijímán novou komunitou a proč je pozice konvertity v komunitě problematická. Součástí práce je analýza autobiografické knihy Sen o mém otci, kterou napsal konvertita, současný vrchní zemský a pražský rabín Karel Sidon. V knize popisuje klíčové momenty svého dětství. Analýza s použitím biografické metody se snaží ukázat, jakým způsobem tyto momenty ovlivnily Sidonovo pozdější rozhodnutí konvertovat a dále pak zhodnotit význam konverze pro židovskou komunitu v dnešní době.

Abstract:

The topic of this diploma thesis is religious conversion with reference to outer processes by which it is accompanied and which are necessary for its successful realization. The thesis will reflect these problems on the case of Judaism. The changes do not take place only on the individual level during converting, the relations with the people in individual´s life transform as well. Conversion is therefore above all a social phenomenon. The individual accepts new belief and also enters in a new group of people, which he has to adapt himself and to which he is being accepted. The aim of this thesis is thus to describe these processes, which proceed through social interactions, on which the subjective reality of the convert is dependent a through which is being maintained. In the case of Judaism, the religious rules and commandments affect directly individual´s everyday and practical life and routine matters. In Judaism the conversion has always been a problematic issue, often very controversial and that has influence on how the converts are seen inside the Jewish community and why their position inside the community is uncertain. Part of the thesis is an analysis of autobiographical book Sen o mém otci, which was written by present Czech chief and Prague rabbi Karol Sidon. In this book he writes about key moments of his childhood. The analysis with the application of biographical method aims to show how these moments have influenced later decision to convert and moreover review the significance of conversion for Jewish community at the present time.
