Assimilation or Extinction: American Indian Education Policy in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries

Abstract:

The work describes and illuminates the Indian education policy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with an emphasis on the boarding school system. It explains the reasons for this policy, the process itself and of course the results. The second part of the work is devoted to two Native American writers Charles A. Eastman and Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, who were the direct participants of the "civilizing" practices. I compare their memories of childhod years spent in traditional tribal societies as well as their school experience.
