Historical Hypothesis of the Failure of Memetics

Abstract:

V 70. letech 20. století se objevilo několik prvních příspěvků k dnes již poměrně rozsáhlému konceptu darwinistické evoluce kultury. Prvním byla memetika, z ostatních vykrystalizovala tzv. teorie genově-kulturní koevoluce (GCCE). Tyto na první pohled podobné teorie mají nicméně odlišný osud. Zatímco memetika je dnes již mrtvý projekt, GCCE se uchytila poměrně úspěšně. Cílem této práce je na základě srovnání vývoje těchto teorií vysvětlit, proč se memetika nedokázala přizpůsobit podmínkám prostředí v rámci vědecké komunity. Argumentuji pro tezi, že memetika se svým silným a jednoduchým tvrzením, vyplývajícím z geno-centrického evolučního modelu, předložila projekt s tak značným předsudkem vůči konceptu replikace, že zavázala badatele ke spekulativnímu hledání ontologie memů. Matematické modely, ze kterých vzešla GCCE, naopak umožnily v rámci tohoto rámce flexibilně a systematicky pracovat na teoretické i empirické úrovni.

Abstract:

In the 1970s, there appeared several contributions to today’s rather extensive concept of Darwinian evolution of culture. The first was the memetics, the so-called gene-culture coevolution theory (GCCE) emerged from the others. These, at first glance, similar theories, however, have a different fate. While memetics is already a dead project, GCCE has achieved quite a success. The aim of this thesis is, based on comparison between the development of these two theories, to answer the question of why memetics failed to adapt to the environmental conditions within the scientific community. I argue that the memetics, with its strong and simple thesis resulted from the gene-centered evolutionary model, proposed a project with such a considerable prejudice against the concept of replication that it committed researchers to speculative searching for meme ontology. On the contrary, mathematical models from which GCCE originated have enabled researchers to work flexibly and systematically on both theoretical and empirical level within one framework.
