Computer simulation in evaluation of biodiversity

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá základními metodami hodnocení biodiverzity a simulacemi dat biologických společenstev. Je v ní vymezena biodiverzita jako vlastnost společenstev. Jsou zdůrazněny dva hlavní aspekty biodiverzitních dat, čili kvalita a kvantita. Jsou zde popsány typy biodiverzity, různé pohledy jejího uchopení, je zmíněn také význam rozmanitosti společenstev pro fungování ekosystémů a pro lidskou společnost. Popsány jsou metody popisu diverzity – nejdůležitější indexy biodiverzity a modely abundancí taxonů. V další části jsou popsány některé na niku orientované modely. Práce také zmiňuje a popisuje různé metody vizualizace abundancí. Počítače jsou na poli výzkumu této oblasti užitečné nejen pro hodnocení biodiverzity společenstev či biotopů a usnadnit tak pochopení ekologických vztahů, ale mohou také sloužit k tvorbě umělých datových souborů s danými vlastnostmi. Přehled matematických popisů reakcí druhů na gradient, kterými můžeme taková data simulovat, jsou také v textu zmíněna. Je popsáno také několik programů, které nám mohou být velkou pomocí při bádání ve zmíněných oblastech. Kvalitní matematický popis vztahů mezi různými metodami se neobejde bez statistických testů. Je podán úvod do této problematiky a uvedeny nejdůležitější příklady testů jsou také v práci zmíněny. V praktické části byl simulován datový soubor, na kterém jsem se pokusil porovnat jednak diverzitní indexy, jednak Tokeshiho na niku orientované modely. Práce zmiňuje několik množství literárních zdrojů, jejichž cílem je nejen podložit uvedené teze, ale také poskytnout čtenáři základní historický vývoj v probíraných oblastech, a náměty pro další studium.

Abstract:

The thesis is contributed to the basic methods used in biodiversity evaluation and to the simulation of community data and its analysis. The concept of biodiversity as a propriety of biological communities is discussed. I mention here two main standpoints of biodiversity data, being the qualitative and quantitative aspect of biodiversity. I describe different biodiversity types, such as a differential diversity and diverse points of view on what biodiversity means. The important role of diversity for smooth functioning of the ecosystems is mentioned, so its significance for mankind. I further describe some of biodiversity methods like the most common diversity indices and species-abundance models. Furthermore, I also describe six main niche-oriented models. The paper describes some visualization techniques for abundance data too. The computers play a significant role in the field of biodiversity evaluation. They can be used either for description of the diversity of certain communities or habitats, either for creating artificial data sets with the known properties. An overview of mathematical description of species’ response to an environmental gradient is given. These models can be used to simulate former datasets. I also mention few software tools which can be very useful if one is considering issues in this field. Quality mathematical description of relationship among different methods is impossible without using statistics. An informal introduction to hypotheses testing, along with few examples are also given into an account. In the second computational part of the work I have simulated one artificial data set which has consequently been used to verify the potential of the simulations and make a brief discussion about the relationship among diversity indices and six Tokeshi’s models. There are several references cited in the paper. Their purpose is not only to give a justification to the statements, but also to provide historical development in the fields referred and the suggestion for further study
