Means of Persuasion in Article Titles of Rudé Právo After the Foundation of Charter 77

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je identifikovat persvazivní prostředky a stylistické vady v titulcích a podtitulcích zpravodajských materiálů Rudého práva z období po vzniku Charty 77, tedy mezi 7. lednem a 31. březnem 1977. Nejprve byly vybrány relevantní zpravodajské materiály vztahující se k Chartě 77 a jejím souvislostem. Poté jsme v titulcích těchto materiálů identifikovali persvazivní prostředky, kategorizovali je dle schématu uvedeného v Encyklopedickém slovníku češtiny (2002) a vypočítali celkové procentuální zastoupení persvazivních titulků ve sledovaném souboru. Zjištěné výsledky ilustrují dichotomii mezi současným pojetím zpravodajství coby objektivního poskytování informací a manipulativním zpravodajstvím v komunistické éře. Následně jsme se na základě zjištěných nejvýznamnějších persvazivních prostředků sestavili pravděpodobný obraz komunikační strategie Rudého práva a porovnali jej s dosud publikovanými poznatky o mediální kampani proti Chartě 77, která v daném období probíhala. Při tomto postupu jsme využívali analyticko-syntetické metody. Stejným způsobem jsme vyhledávali i stylistické vady v titulcích. Naším cílem bylo zjistit, zda se tyto vady ve zpravodajských materiálech objevují i přes pečlivou kontrolu (a v případě Rudého práva i cenzuru), které byly zveřejňované články podrobeny. Při bližší specifikaci těchto stylistických vad jsme vycházeli z publikace J. V. Bečky s názvem Jazyk a styl novin (1973).

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to identify the means of persuasion and stylistic errors in titles and subtitles of news articles published in Rudé právo after the foundation of Charter 77 (i.e. between January 7 and March 31, 1977). Our task was to look up, select and analyze the relevant news materials related to Charter 77 and their implications. We categorized the means of persuasion identified in the titles in line with the scheme defined in Encyklopedický slovník češtiny (2002) (Encyclopaedic Dictionary of the Czech Language). Then we calculated the total percentage of titles that exhibit any of the persuasive means. The results illustrate the dichotomy between the contemporary concept of news coverage as an unbiased source of information and the manipulative news provided by media under communism. Based on the most significant means of persuasion identified, and using the analytic-synthetic research method, we suggested the likely picture of “Rudé právo” communication strategy, and compared this strategy with the existing theory concepts of that day’s media campaign against Charter 77. We used the same approach to identify the stylistic errors in the titles. We wanted to determine whether such errors occurred despite of the fact that news materials in Rudé právo were thoroughly checked and censored before they were published. We used the classification of stylistic errors by J. V. Bečka, as defined in the book Jazyk a styl novin (Language and Style of Newspapers) (1973).
