Grandchildren care and its impact on older people life satisfaction

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaobírá souvislostí prarodičovství a životní spokojenosti lidí staršího věku. První část práce obsahuje teorie vysvětlující, jak by prarodičovství mělo působit na životní spokojenost seniorů, a empirické studie, které podobný vztah zkoumaly. Následuje sekundární analýza dat z druhé vlny výzkumu Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Vliv samotné přítomnosti vnoučete v rodině na životní spokojenost, kterou našly předchozí studie, se v naší analýze nepotvrdila. Zkoumání vlivu péče o vnoučata na životní spokojenost prarodičů zpočátku jevilo možnou existenci vztahu, po kontrole pro další proměnné tato souvislost zmizela. Že by frekvence péče o vnouče (rozdíl mezi méně a více pečujícími prarodiči) působila na životní spokojenost prarodiče, pro to jsme též nenalezli žádný důkaz. Nebyl tak nalezen žádný vliv prarodičovství na životní spokojenost seniorů. To je ve zjevném rozporu s výsledky zahraničních studií hovořících o pozitivní asociaci. Výsledky naší analýzy napovídají, že prarodičovství a péče o vnoučata zřejmě nepatří mezi perspektivní oblasti výzkumu, co se týče hledání zdrojů vyšší životní spokojenosti ve stáří.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the connection between grandparenthood and older people life satisfaction. The first part of thesis contains theories explaining how grandparenthood can affect old people life satisfaction and empirical studies which researched similar association. Secondary analysis of data from second wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe follows. Impact of the presence of grandchild in the family at the old people life satisfaction, which has been found by the previous studies, was not validated. The examination of the impact of grandchildren care at the grandparent life satisfaction initially showed possible existence of associtation, but after controling for additional variables this association ceased to exist. We could not find any evidence that frequency of grandchildren care (difference between more caring and less caring grandparents) have influence at grandparents life satisfaction. No impact of the grandparenthood at the seniors life satisfaction was found. We can see evident conflict with non-Czech studies which found positive association. Our analysis results suggests that grandparenthood and grandchildren care are not perspective fields of research as regards the sources of higher life satisfaction in an old age search.
