Decolonization of British and French Empire in comparative perspective

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá komparativním pohledem na dekolonizaci britského a francouzského impéria. Dekolonizace byla jedním z významných procesů mezinárodních vztahů po Druhé světové válce. Pro Británii a Franci, jako dvě největší koloniální velmoci, byla tato otázka spjata nejen s ekonomickými, ale i strategickými a psycholgickými kontexty. Přístup obou velmocí k otázce dekolonizace se lišil zejéna v jejich cíli, kdy v britském případě měl být cílem přechod země k odpovědné demokratické vládě, zatímco v případě francouzkském byla nejprve cílem asimilace a posléze asociace koloniálních území ke kontinentální Francii. Z toho také vyplývaly zásadní problémy dekolonizačního procesu, který byl v případě Francie bolestnější. Ačkoli v tomto procesu hrály svou roli i faktory vnější, zásadnější se z hlediska této práce ukázaly být faktory vnitropolitické, které jednozančně převážily význam požadavků kolonií. Vnější vlivy měly svůj význam jen jakožto tlak a uplatnění vlivu supervelmocí nového světového řádu.

Abstract:

This M.A. thesis adresses the process of decolonisation of British and French empires in comparative perspective. Decolonisation was one of the most important processes of international relations occurring in the era following the end of WW2. This process had not only its economic but also strategic and psychologic connotations and consequences. Both Great Britain and France as the worlds greatest colonial powers differed in the aim of their colonial mission as well as in the way they administered the empire. Britains aim was to achieve a democratic and responsible self governance of colonies followed by the transfer of power. France on the contrary sought to bind the colonies with itself first with the concept of asimilation and later with the concept of association. From these aims and measures used in administering the colonial affairs more problematic decolonisation of French empire arose than in the case of British one. And after all when considering the impact of external influences, it is clear they had only limited effects for the process itself of course with the exception of the superpowers interests. Demands coming from the colonies (periphery) were outweighed by the wishes and demands of colonial powers (center).
