Indexing Techniques for Searching Complex Relationships in RDF Graphs

Abstract:

Jeden způsob jak získávat informace ze Sémantického webu je hledání entit podle zadaných kritérií. Tento přístup se často nazývá paradigma Query-for-Attribute. Dalším způsobem jak získávat znalosti ze Sémantického webu je hledání sémantických asociací mezi entitami obsaženými v Sémantickém webu. Takovéto hledání nemůže být dosaženo běžnými databázovými prostøedky, protože struktura prohledávaných dat není předem známa. V běžných databázích, když je dotaz zadáván, uživatel zná strukturu požadovaných entit a vztahy mezi nimi, avšak v paradigmatu, které bude představeno níže, jsou dotazovány právì vztahy mezi entitami. Výsledkem dotazu tedy nejsou další entity, které jsou v nějakém daném vztahu, ale vztahy mezi zkoumanými entitami. Tento přístup je prezentován jako paradigma Query-for-Relationship. Problém hledání vztahù mezi entitami může být převeden na problém hledání cest v grafech, které splňují určité požadavky. K řešení tohoto problému lze použít různé techniky, jako například grafové algoritmy, algoritmy pro výpočet tranzitivního obalu relace nebo specializovaných indexačních struktur. Tato práce je zaměřena na vývoj nové indexační techniky pro hledání cest v grafech, která kombinuje myšlenky všech dříve zmíněných přístupů. Navrhovaná struktura podporuje dotazy na cesty představované třídou rho-operátorù. Je vhodná k distribuované a paralelní implementaci.

Abstract:

One way of querying the Semantic Web is the search for entities that meet the given criteria. This approach is called the Query-for-Attribute paradigm. Another way how to retrieve knowledge from the Semantic Web is the search for Semantic Associations between entities involved in the Semantic Web. This can not be achieved using usual database tools since the structure of the searched data is not known a priori. In common databases, when stating the query, user knows the exact relations among the concerned entities. On the other hand, in the paradigm introduced below, the relationship is being queried. Therefore, the result of the query is not comprised of other entities that are in some stated relation but of the relations among the examined entities. This is presented as the Query-for-Relationship paradigm. The problem of searching relationships among entities can be mapped onto a problem of searching paths that meet certain conditions in the RDF graphs. Various techniques can be used to solve this problem, e.g. the graph algorithms, computation of transitive closure of relation algorithms or specialized indexing structures. This work is aimed at the development of a novel path search indexing technique that combines the ideas of all previously mentioned approaches. The proposed structure supports the path queries represented by the rho-operator class. It is suitable for distributed and paralel implementations.
