Future of Small Modular Reactors in Poland

Abstract:

Malé modulární reaktory můžou představovat nový milník v celém energetickém sektoru, jelikož se jim připisuje potenciál být levnějším a snadněji dostupným zdrojem energie než tradiční jaderné elektrárny. V současnosti se Polsko připravuje na transformaci svého energetického sektoru a plánuje výstavbu klasických jaderných elektráren. Ty se však často potýkají s problémy jako prodloužení délky stavby či navýšení nákladů. Hlavním cílem práce je proto zjistit, zda Polsko disponuje potenciálem pro budoucí využití malých modulárních reaktorů, které by mohly pomoci Polsku v energetické tranzici. Práce využívá upravenou metodiku IAEA, která zahrnuje 19 indikátorů, a má pomoci státům zhodnotit jejich připravenost na tuto technologii. Výsledkem práce bude objasnění, zda je Polsko vhodným kandidátem pro využití malých modulárních reaktorů.

Abstract:

Small modular reactors could make an impact on the whole energy sector, because they might be cheaper and more accessible source of energy production than conventional nuclear power plants. Currently, Poland is preparing for its energy transition and is planning to build conventional nuclear power plants. However, conventional nuclear power plants tend to have problems with extended construction time and increased costs. Main goal of this research is thus to find out if Poland has capabilities to implement small modular reactors, which could help the country with energy transition. The research is based on modified IAEA methodology that uses 19 indicators which should help countries to assess their readiness for such technology. The re-search will clarify whether Poland is a suitable candidate for the use of small modular reactors.
