Consequences of lifelong singlehood on health in later life in Europe

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jaké sociodemografické a kulturní charakteristiky mohou vysvětlit vyšší počet funkčních omezení u lidí, kteří nikdy nebydleli s partnerem nebo partnerkou. Používala jsem data z Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe. Výsledky analýzy ukázaly, že rozdíly na individuální úrovni lze vysvětlit složením populace z hlediska vzdělání, kohorty narození a zdraví během dětství. Mezinárodní rozdíly lze vysvětlit kulturními charakteristikami jako je individualismus, mocenská vzdálenost, vyhýbání se nejistotě, dlouhodobá orientace a shovívavost.

Abstract:

This thesis aimed to study what sociodemographic and cultural characteristics can explain more functional limitations in lifelong singles. Analyzing data from the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe, I found that the differences at the individual level can be explained by the composition of the population in terms of education, cohort, and childhood health. I have also found that cross-national differences can be explained by cultural characteristics such as individualism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and indulgence.
