Evaluation of the effectiveness of Kinesio Tape in improving postural balance in ataxic subjects.

Abstract:

Ataxia manifests itself through walk alterations and balance strategies. A correct postural control is the result of the interaction of different motoric and sensorial systems: in particular the loss of proprioception in lower limbs, especially at the distal level, can be recognized as one of the principal causes of postural instability. In an orthostatic position the center of mass (COM) and its projection to the ground, the ?Center of pressure (COP)?, must be held within the boundaries of the base of support. Maintaining a stable orthostatism requires the active contraction of muscular groups against the force of gravity, which is by itself highly destabilizing. The latter, in a standing position, passes in front of the tibiotarsic joint, applying on this one rotatory motions attributable to body swaying and strains:

L?atassia si manifesta con alterazioni del cammino e delle strategie di equilibrio. Il corretto controllo posturale č il risultato dell?interazione di diversi sistemi sensoriali e motori: in particolare la perdita di propriocezione a carico degli arti inferiori soprattutto a livello distale puň essere riconosciuta come una delle principali cause di instabilitŕ posturale. In posizione ortostatica il centro di massa (COM) e la sua proiezione al terreno, ?centro di pressione (COP)? devono essere mantenuti entro i confini della base d?appoggio. Il mantenimento di un ortostatismo stabile richiede la contrazione attiva di gruppi muscolari contro la forza di gravitŕ la quale č fortemente destabilizzante.
