Comparative Analysis of the Portrayal of the Amerindian in Bernard Assiniwi's La saga des Béothuks and François Barcelo's La tribu.

Abstract:

The basic idea of this bachelor thesis is the question, how does the portrayal of the Amerindian look like in the contemporary Canadian francophone literature, especially compared to the true form of the culture of indigenous people in North America. The answer is sought in the books of Quebec authors: Bernard Assiniwi and his "La saga des Beothuks" and François Barcelo and his "La Tribu". The theoretical part deals with the presentation of these authors and their works, with the definition of basic terms and with outlining of the development of this literary image through the history. The analytic part studies the selected constituents of this image, such as the appearance of the Indians, their attitude to the Europeans, to sexuality or to the spiritual world, and compares the shapes of these constituents in the books.

Abstract:

Základní myšlenkou této práce je otázka, jak vypadá literární obraz Indiána v současné kanadské frankofonní literatuře, a to zejména v porovnání se skutečnou podobou kultury původních obyvatel Severní Ameriky. Odpověď na ni je hledána v dílech quebeckých autorů: Bernarda Assiniwi - „La saga des Béothuks“ a Françoise Barcelo - „La tribu“. Teoretická část práce se zabývá představením těchto autorů a jejich díla, vymezením základních pojmů a nastíněním historického vývoje tohoto literárního obrazu. Část analytická pak studuje jeho vybrané složky, například vzhled Indiánů, jejich postoj k Evropanům, k sexualitě či k duchovnímu světu, a porovnává podobu těchto složek v daných dílech.
