Postkoloniální fikce: Jak se orientalismus promítá v díle Duna Franka Herberta

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes Dune by Frank Herbert from an Orientalist point of view, as Edward W. Said described in his book Orientalism. The main objective of this work is to find and analyze elements of Orientalism in Herbert's Dune and explore how these elements influence the reader's perception of the Orient. The thesis focuses on the first book of the series. It concentrates on several themes, like the sources the author used as an inspiration for the other characters, the environment, and surroundings in which the story is set, the language used by the characters, and the influence of Lawrence of Arabia on the main character Paul Atreides. The work also investigates whether the book contains stereotypes related to the position and status of women. The thesis examines whether Herbert was influenced by the oriental cultures and if it can be found in the linguistic, geographical, religious, and cultural elements of the novel. This work also explores how these elements contribute to the overall significance of Dune and how they may confirm or deny Said's theories about the stereotypical perception of the Orient.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou románu Duna od Franka Herberta z pohledu orientalismu, jak jej popsal Edward W. Said ve své knize Orientalismus. Hlavním cílem práce je identifikovat a analyzovat orientalistické prvky v Herbertově díle a zkoumat, jak tyto prvky ovlivňují čtenářovo vnímání Orientu. Práce se soustředí na první knihu série Duna a zaměřuje se na několik klíčových téma, jako jsou zdroje, které autor využil jako inspiraci pro hrdiny románu, prostředí, do kterého je příběh zasazen, jazyk, který je postavami užíván a vliv Lawrence z Arábie na postavu Paula Atreida. Práce zjišťuje, zda kniha obsahuje i stereotypy související s postavením žen. Analýza ukazuje, že Herbert byl ovlivněn orientálními kulturami, což se projevuje v jazykových, geografických, náboženských a kulturních prvcích jeho románu. Práce rovněž zkoumá, jak tyto orientalistické prvky přispívají k celkovému vyznění a významu románu Duna a jak mohou potvrzovat nebo vyvracet Saidovy teorie o stereotypním vnímání Orientu. Výsledkem je hlubší porozumění tomu, že je román Duna nejen literárním dílem, ale může ovlivňovat čtenářův pohled na Orient.
