Aesthetic Preference Research for Planar Periodic Mosaics

Abstract:

This thesis explores the properties of planar periodic mosaic in relation to the human visual perception. The used approach is unique by using machine learning methods for predicting expected aesthetic quality. These methods are used in the three different approaches to the dataset and it shows some interesing behaviour of the algorithms. There are also revealed some properties of mosaics, or two-dimensional patterns respectively, which are important for the visual aesthetic perception. These properties were utilized to develop small demonstrative application, consequently. At the end, other possible application are indicated as well as more research activity which suggest itself.
