Life satisfaction, happiness and fertility

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem mezi mírou spokojenosti a počtem dětí a vztahem mezi mírou pocitu štěstí a počtem dětí jedince. Jejím cílem je najít odpověď na otázku, zda změny v počtu dětí jedince mají dopad na míru spokojenosti a štěstí jedince a pokusit se na základě tohoto zjištění odhadnout, zda případné poklesy nebo nárůsty spokojenosti či štěstí mohou mít vliv na fertilitní chování jedince. V teoretické části je představena motivace k výzkumům tohoto typu, kterou je ve většině případů nízká fertilita západních zemí, uvedeny jsou hlavní teorie, které tuto nízkou plodnost vysvětlují a shrnuty výsledky evropských a světových výzkumů, které se pokoušely najít souvislost mezi mírou spokojenosti nebo štěstí jedince a počtem jeho dětí. Analytická část vychází z dat tří vln výzkumu EVS (1991, 1999 a 2008), začíná deskripcí vývoje míry spokojenosti a pocitu štěstí obyvatel České republiky a pokračuje testováním hypotéz pomocí metod korelace a regrese. Ve všech sledovaných letech korelační koeficienty prokázaly slabý vztah mezi mírou štěstí a počtem dětí a žádný vztah mezi mírou spokojenosti a počtem dětí. Binární logistickou regresí bylo zjištěno, že v průběhu sledovaných let měli bezdětní lidé většinou o něco vyšší šance, že budou šťastni než rodiče, z výsledků ordinální regrese vyplynulo, že v daném období byl vztah mezi počtem dětí a mírou spokojenosti spíše nevýznamný, silnějším se stával pouze v případě rozvedených a odloučeně žijících osob. Individuální míry spokojenosti nebyly shledány jako vhodné proměnné k vysvětlení příčin změn plodnosti obyvatel České republiky, změny v šancích na pocit štěstí ve spojitosti s přechodem k rodičovství by pak případně bylo možné použít jako jedno z možných vysvětlení nízké fertility a odkládání rodičovství do vyššího věku.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the relationship between the level of satisfaction and number of children and between the level of feeling of happiness and the number of children of an individual. It‘s aim is to answer the question if changes in an individual’s number of children influence his level of satisfaction and his level of happiness, and to try to estimate on the ground of this findings if potential falls or increases of satisfaction or happiness can influence individual’s fertility behaviour. In the theoretical part of this thesis is introduced motivation to this type of researches, which is in most cases low fertility in western countries. I sum up the results of European and world researches which were trying to find some associations between the individual’s level of satisfaction or happiness and the number of his or her children. The analytical part comes out of three waves of EVS research (1991, 1999 and 2008), it begins with the description of the level of satisfaction development and feeling of happiness of the Czech Republic inhabitants of and it continues with testing of the hypothesis using the methods of correlation and regression. The correlation coefficients proved a week relationship between the level of happiness and number of children and no relationship between the level of satisfaction and the number of children in all observed years. It was found through the binary logistic regression that childless people have mostly a bit higher chances of being happy than parents. According to the results of ordinal regression, the relationship between the number of children and the level of satisfaction was rather insignificant in the given period, it became stronger only in case of divorced and separately living persons. Individual rates of satisfaction were not found as appropriate variables in order to explain the fertility changes of the Czech Republic inhabitants. The changes in chances of feeling of happiness in connection with the turn to parenthood could be used as one of possible explanations of low fertility and postponing of parenthood.
