Film Culture in 1930s in Brno. A comparison of cinemagoers preferences in the context of space and society

Abstract:

This research builds upon the rich collection of local film history data stored in the online database Cinematic Brno. Examining the programming data of every cinema in Brno during the 1930’s and the oral history connected to this era, we try to look closer on the cinemagoers’ preferences across the town. We explain the different tendencies in the preferences based on of the social stratification of the town and the proposed screening ranks of the cinemas. In the 1930’s, these ranks had not been officially defined yet, however, based on programming data, we are able to reconstruct the system of main routes the films were floating through the town. The goal of this research is to outline the main tendencies of the film culture in Brno in the 1930’s and the differences between the audiences of certain cinemas based on their different social status and localization within the town.

Abstract:

Výskum pre predkladanú diplomovú prácu spočíval v snahe vyťažiť bohatú dátovú základňu online databázy Filmové Brno, uchovávajúcu historické materiály spojené s lokálnou filmovou históriou, predovšetkým programy kín a orálnu históriu. Na pozadí sledovaného obdobia tridsiatych rokov 20. storočia sme sa snažili analyzovať programy kín, navrhnúť ich hracie úrovne, ktoré sa v meste vyprofilovali, definovať popularitu filmov a porovnať preferencie divákov v rôznych častiach mesta. Cieľom tohto výskumu bolo popísať hlavné tendencie filmovej kultúry v Brne v tridsiatych rokoch a načrtnúť rozdielne preferencie divákov na pozadí sociálneho, národnostného a priestorového členenia mesta.
