Microdiamonds and related UHP phases from high-presure granulites and their origin

Abstract:

Nálezy mikrodiamantů v horninách kontitnentální kůry indikují, že útržky těchto hornin byly subdukovány do velkých hloubek. Diamanty uzavřené v hlavních a akcesorických minerálech (nejčastěji granátu, kyanitu a zirkonu) mají různé morfologie, jejichž vznik nebyl dosud uspokojivě vysvětlen. Navíc rozvoj metod elastické geobarometrie umožňuje stanovit tlakové podmínky uzavření diamantů v jejich hostitelských fázích. Tato práce přináší přehled mikro- a nanoanalytických metod studia mikrodiamantů (SEM, CL, AFM, FIB-TEM, mikro-Raman) využitých k získání informací o morfologii, povrchových texturách, vnitřní struktuře a spektrálních parametrech mikrodiamantů severozápadních Čech pro posouzení vztahů jednotlivých morfologických typů diamantů a podmínek jejich vzniku. Morfologie, vnitřní stavba a charakter rozhraní s hostitelskou fází mikrodiamantů se odlišují, a to v závislosti na typu horniny a hostitelského minerálu. Stejně tak se liší i jejich spektrální charakteristiky. Diamanty v kyselé hornině z vrtu T7 mají běžně tvar ideálního oktaedru s hladkými plochami a ostrými hranami a jejich rozhraní vůči jejich hostitelské fázi (kyanitu) je uzavřené. Tyto diamanty jsou charakterizované Ramanovým posunem k vyšším vlnovým délkám (1331,5–1333,6 cm-1) a vysokým FWHM (6,4–8,1 cm-1). Pozorovaná pozice v poli přetlaku vůči diamantovému standardu může být způsobena ostrými hranami a rohy krystalů. Zvýšené hodnoty FWHM odrážejí přítomnost dislokací, pozorovaných ve FIB-TEM, jejichž vznik lze přičíst anizotropnímu tepelnému smršťování hostitelského kyanitu během dekomprese. Diamanty v intermediální horninách, uzavřené v granátu a v zirkonu, jsou kuboktaedry až kuboidy, jak monokrystalické i polykrystalické. Tyto diamanty vykazují větší variabilitu v naměřených hodnotách Ramanových pásů (1331,2–1334,4 cm-1) a FWHM (2,8–8,0 cm-1). Vzorek 95 je charakterizován nulovým posunem vůči standardu a posunem k nižším vlnovým délkám, indikujícím podtlak. To odpovídá přítomnost mezer mezi diamantem a hostem. Posun k nižším vlnovým délkám je v souladu s teorií elastické geobarometrie. Na jeho základě byly vypočteny tlaky uzavření diamantu v granátu, a to 4,81±0,14 GPa (vůči diamantovému standardu z literatury) a 4,99±0,14 GPa (vůči vlastním měřením standardu) pro teplotu 1100 °C. Tyto tlaky odpovídají termobarometrickým výpočtům. To ukazuje na perspektivní využití elastické geobarometrie pro diamanty z jiných ultravysokotlakých terénů.

Abstract:

Findings of microdiamonds in the rocks of the continental crust indicate that fragments of these rocks were subducted to great depths. Diamonds enclosed in the rock-forming and accessory minerals (most commonly in garnet, kyanite and zircon) have different morphologies whose formation has not been satisfactorily explained yet. In addition, the development of elastic geobarometry methods makes it possible to determine the entrapment pressure of diamonds in their host phases. This work provides an overview of micro- and nanoanalytical methods for the study of microdiamonds (SEM, CL, AFM, FIB-TEM, micro-Raman) used to obtain information on morphology, surface textures, internal structure and spectral parameters to assess the relationships between individual morphological types of diamonds from northwestern Bohemia and conditions of their origin. The morphology, internal structure and character of the interface with the host phase of microdiamonds differ depending on the type of rock and host mineral. The Raman spectral parameters differ, too. Diamonds in the acid rock from T7 drillcore have commonly form of an ideal octahedron with smooth faces and sharp edges, and their interface to their host phase (kyanite) is closed. These diamonds are characterized by a Raman upshift (1331.5–1333.6 cm-1) and high FWHM (6.4–8.1 cm-1). The observed overpressure compared to the diamond standard may be due to the sharp edges and corners of the crystals. The high FWHM values reflect the presence of dislocations, observed in FIB-TEM, which can be attributed to anisotropic thermal contraction of the host kyanite during decompression. Diamonds in intermediate rocks, enclosed in garnet and zircon, are cuboctahedra to cuboids, both single and polycrystalline. These diamonds show greater variability in the measured Raman band values (1331.2–1334.4 cm-1) and FWHM (2.8–8.0 cm-1). Sample 95 is characterized by a zero shift relative to the standard and by a downshift, indicating an underpressure. This corresponds to the presence of gaps between the diamond and the host. The downshift is consistent with the theory of elastic geobarometry. The calculated entrapment pressures of diamond enclosed in garnet are 4.81±0.14 GPa (using unstrained reference diamond from the literature) and 4.99±0.14 GPa (compared to the own measurementsof the standard) for a temperature of 1100 °C. These pressures correspond to thermobarometric calculations. This shows a perspective of the use of elastic geobarometry for diamonds from other ultrahigh-pressure terrains.
