Globalization of the reincarnation and karma beliefs and their impact on thinking and action

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je popsat a interpretovat podobu pozápadněných představ o reinkarnaci a karmě v Čechách a vliv těchto představ na myšlení a jednání lidí. V teoretické části se věnuji pojetí reinkarnace a karmy v buddhismu a hinduismu, procesu přejímání, mísení a globalizace těchto představ v širším kontextu. V empirické části jsem se snažila proniknout do nitra respondentů, k jejich postojům k reinkarnaci a karmě. Otázky byly kladeny tak, abych zjistila, co si pod reinkarnací a karmou představují, co je k tomu přivedlo, co pro ně představuje smrt a jaké pocity v nich tyto ideje vyvolávají. Dále výzkum zkoumá, zda a jaký vliv mají představy na myšlení, a zda formují jednání, tj. jak ovlivňují každodenní život. Porovnám, jak se liší pohledy dvou sociálních skupin v Čechách, tj. buddhistů a nebuddhistů. Buddhisté, s nimiž jsem prováděla rozhovory, se hlásí ke škole Diamantové cesty linie Karma Kagjü.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to describe and interpret the form of ideas about reincarnation and karma in Bohemia and the influence of these ideas on people's thinking and actions. In the theoretical part I discuss the concept of reincarnation and karma in Buddhism and Hinduism, the process of adoption, mixing and globalization of these ideas in a broader context. In the empirical part I tried to discover respondent's attitudes towards reincarnation and karma. The questions were asked to find out how they imagined reincarnation and karma, what brought them to these ideas, what death meant to them and what feelings these ideas evoked in them. Furthermore, the research explores whether and how the ideas influence thinking, and whether they shape actions, i.e. how they influence everyday life. I will compare how the views of two social groups in the Czech Republic, i.e. Buddhists and non-Buddhists, differ. The Buddhists I interviewed subscribe to the Diamond Way Buddhism of the Karma Kagyu lineage.
