Reconceptualising "mainstream" youth: An examination of young people's consumer lifestyles in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tématem předložené práce je ‘mainstreamová‘ mládež v pozdní modernitě. Koncept ‘mainstreamové’ mládeže je v této práci ukotven v debatě, která problematizuje strukturální a kulturální polarizaci ve výzkumu mládeže a současně kritizuje přílišnou zaměřenost obou přístupů na spektakulární nebo znevýhodněné skupiny mladých.‘Mainstreamová’ mládež a její každodenní zkušenost je zde chápána jako opomíjený element v sociologii mládeže (e.g. MacDonald and Coffield 1991, Miles 2000, 2002, Roberts 2011). Ve své disertaci se stavím kriticky k současnému výzkumu ‘post-revoluční’ mládeže v České republice a problematizuji zejména negativní konstrukce mainstreamové mládeže coby hédonistické, materialistické a pasivně konformní generace. Argumentuji, že tyto reprezentace jsou z velké části konstruovány skrze diskursy zaměřené na rizikovou mládež, které dominují v současném výzkumu mladých. Ve své práci se pokouším zjistit, co znamená být pro dnešního mladého člověka součástí mainstreamu skrze kvalitativní studii zaměřenou na význam spotřeby v každodenním životě ‘obyčejných’ mladých lidí. Ačkoliv mnohé klíčové charakteristiky pozdní modernity jsou dle Giddense (1991) a Becka (1992, 2002) soustředěny okolo spotřeby a životního stylu, každodenní zkušenosti mladých lidí se spotřebou, v níž se současně promítá jejich reakce na společenskou transformaci, nebyla zatím v české sociologii mládeže věnována patřičná pozornost. Zvolený přístup tak představuje významný přínos pro soudobý výzkum mladých v České republice. Výsledky kvalitativní studie s 95-ti mladými lidmi ve věku 15 – 27 let naznačují, že být součástí mainstreamu neznamená přímé podvolování se dominantním mocenským strukturám. Výsledky poukazují na míru reflexivity, skrze níž tito mladí lidé zpochybňují stereotypy o pasivní konformitě. Činí tak komplexními, zároveň však paradoxními způsoby, které v dosavadních výzkumech mládeže v České Republice nebyly doposud dobře zachyceny. Text uzavírá diskuze, zda a do jaké míry koncept ‘mainstreamové’ mládeže nabízí potenciální způsob jak porozumět vztahu mladých lidí ke společenské změně v kontextu individualizované společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the concept of ‘mainstream’ youth in late modernity. The sociology of youth has traditionally operated from two distinct and often opposing perspectives, concerned with either ‘youth transitions’ or ‘youth (sub)cultures’. This polarisation, along with a focus on marginal, spectacular and disadvantaged youth, has resulted in the neglect of the experiences of ‘mainstream’ youth who cannot be easily pigeonholed into the above categories (e.g. MacDonald and Coffield 1991, Miles 2000, 2002, Roberts 2011). This thesis takes this discussion as a starting point and critically evaluates contemporary youth research on ‘post-revolutionary’ youth in the Czech Republic. The negative conceptions of ‘mainstream’ youth as a hedonistic, materialistic and passively conforming generation are questioned. Arguing that the ‘youth as/at risk’ discourse which dominates current youth research in the Czech Republic has constructed rather a limited representation of ‘mainstream’ youth, this thesis seeks to understand what it means to belong to the mainstream through a qualitative research study concerned with ordinary young people´s experience of consumption. This approach represents an important and informative contribution to the existing literature. Although many of the key characteristics of late modernity identified by Beck (1992, 2002) and Giddens (1991) are centred on consumption and lifestyles, young people´s experience with consumption in the Czech Republic as a response to social transformation has not been given sufficient attention. The results, based on the qualitative findings of research conducted with 95 young people aged between 15 and 27, indicate that belonging to the mainstream does not imply straightforward compliance with dominant power structures. Instead, it reflects a degree of reflexivity in which these young people challenge stereotypes of passive conformism in complex, yet often paradoxical ways that are not yet well accounted for by current youth research in the Czech Republic. This thesis concludes by suggesting that the notion of ‘mainstream’ youth offers a potential way of understanding young people’s relationship to social change in what appears to be an increasingly individualised society.
