Who am I, and who is asking? Potential of no-self perspective in psychotherapy

Abstract:

Tato přehledová studie se zaměřuje na perspektivu ne-já (ústřední princip Buddhova učení) v kontextu západní psychoterapie. Tradiční západní přístupy pojímají já jako samostatně existující entitu. To je v příkrém kontrastu s pojetím buddhismu, podle kterého je samostatné já pouhá iluze, jejíž prožitkové odhalení přináší konečné osvobození od utrpení. Perspektiva ne-já představuje jeden z buddhistických principů, které se v posledních desetiletích začínají stále zřetelněji prosazovat v teorii i praxi psychoterapie. Předložený přehled mapuje dvě hlavní oblasti. Zaprvé konceptuální uchopení perspektivy ne-já v kontextu konceptů západní psychologie; zadruhé možnosti praktického uplatnění ne-já v psychoterapii. Vedle přínosů a praktických aplikací jsou představeny také limity a rizika využití perspektivy ne-já. Analyzované nálezy naznačují velký potenciál perspektivy ne-já v mnoha terapeutických kontextech. Načrtnuty jsou možnosti dalšího výzkumného směřování.

Abstract:

This thesis is a theoretical review of no-self perspective (cardinal buddhist principle) in the field of Western psychotherapy. Traditional Western approaches consider self to be a separately existing entity. This is in a sharp contrast with buddhist perspective, which claims that separate self is just an illusion and that experiential revelation of its delusional nature brings ultimate freedom from suffering. No-self perspective is one of the buddhist principles that are more and more integrated into theory and practice of psychotherapy in the last decades. This review focuses on two main areas: 1) Conceptualizations of no-self in the context of theories of Western psychology; 2) Practical potential of no-self perspective in psychotherapy. Apart from possible benefits and practical applications, possible limitations and risks of no-self in psychotherapy are presented. Analysed studies indicate that no-self perspective has a big potential in many therapeutic contexts. Suggestions for future research are discussed.
