Spatial distribution of terrorist activities: the comparison ETA and IRA

Abstract:

Předložená práce se zabývá prostorovým rozložením lokalizace teroristických organizací ETA a IRA, které byly ve své době tvářemi baskického, respektive severoirského nacionalismu. Důraz je kladen na komparaci těchto teroristických organizací, které patřily k nejdéle aktivním teroristickým skupinám v Evropě. Pro potřeby analýzy byla doba činnosti ETA a IRA rozdělena na tři chronologicky definovaná období. Rozdělení je provedeno v souvislosti s významnými událostmi obou teroristických organizací, jako např. přechod od diktatury k demokracii nebo události zapříčiňující radikalizaci organizací. V práci byly nalezeny shodné i odlišné vzorce lokalizace útoků a tato zjištění byla vztažena k typologii potenciálních zón konfliktu. Shodným znakem je směřování útoků do domovských oblastí obou organizací nebo směřování útoků na symbolická místa důležitá pro cílovou skupinu. Ukázalo se, že detailní geografická analýza je důležitým nástrojem pro zjištění pravidelností i odlišností v lokalizačním rozhodování teroristických organizací.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the spatial distribution of the location of the terrorist organizations ETA and IRA, which at that time were faces of Basque and Northeast nationalist. Emphasis is placed on the comparison of these terrorist organizations, which belonged to the longest active terrorist groups in Europe. For analysis purposes, ETA and IRA were divided into three chronologically defined periods. The division is carried out in connection with the major events of both terrorist organizations, such as the transition from dictatorship to democracy or event causing radicalization of organizations. In this thesis, identical and different patterns of attack localization were found and these findings were related to the typology of potential conflict zones. The coincident pattern is to heading attacks to the home areas of both organizations or heading attacks on symbolic places that are important for the target group. It turned out that detailed geographic analysis is an important tool for detecting both regularities and differences in the localization decision-making of terrorist organizations.
