Concept of purity in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci rozeberu status žen v Anglii 19. století. Pro tento účel jsem si zvolila literární médium a na příkladu hrdinky Tess Durdeyfield rozvinu příčiny neblahého údělu žen v době vlády královny Viktorie, které spatřuji především v nesmírně puritánském přístupu střední třídy obyvatelstva a křesťanském vyznání, které dovolovalo ženám realizovat se pouze v rodinném životě. V první kapitole se věnuji všem aspektům života v rozmezí let 1837-1901, vykresluji obecný názor obyvatelstva na uplatnění žen ve společnosti a faktory, které je negativně ovlivňují a vedou často i k tragickým koncům. Druhá kapitola je rozčleněna na dvě části, v první se zabývám ranně Viktoriánskou literaturou, často označovanou jako „Otázka stavu Anglie,“ kde autoři jako Thomas Carlyle a Benjamin Disraeli kritizují dopady „Průmyslové Revoluce.“ V druhé části poskytnu obraz pozdně Viktoriánské literatury, která se orientovala na kontinentální motivy naturalismu a realismu. Autoři pronikají hluboko do nitra lidské duše, zaměřují se na psychologii svých postav a často kritizují status manželství, který uvězňoval a tyranizoval ženy díky nemožnosti rozvést se. V třetí kapitole rozeberu život a literární úspěchy novelisty Thomase Hardyho do roku 1895. Pokračuji v obecném popisu jeho novel situovaných do imaginární krajiny Wessex. V praktické části se zaměřím na jeho román Tess z d’Urbervillů s podtitulem „Čistá žena,“ která se stala obětí Viktoriánského konvenčního pojetí ženy. Thomas Hardy na této tragické hrdince ukazuje determinování každého z nás vnějším okolím a předsudky. Závěr nabízí rozebrání příčin Tessina tragického osudu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the general concept of Victorian woman, supported by the investigation of Thomas Hardy’s novel ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles.’ On the example of central protagonist I demonstrate the prospects of women living in 19th century England and come to conclusion that women were deeply affected by Christian prejudices and rigidity. The theoretical part is divided into the three chapters. The first one offers the broad spectrum of information about Victorian standards of living, covering all aspect of everyday existence. In the second chapter two stages of Victorian novel are presented. In the Early-Victorian or ‘Condition of England’ novel I depicted the authors like Thomas Carlyle and Charles Dickens, who presented the shortcomings of current society. Next part provides the aspects of High-Victorian novel with authors motivated by realism and naturalism and determined to generate the authentic picture of common life. The third chapter concentrates on Thomas Hardy, his life and literary achievements till 1895. In the practical part I analyse the concept of ‘purity’ and the manipulating factors of the novel’s chief protagonist, Tess Durbeyfield. I sum up the thesis with the causes of such pressure.
