Fiction as Foe: Versions of Reality in Coetzee's Foe

Abstract:

Tato práce kriticky rozebírá dílo Foe, jehož autorem je J. M. Coetzee. Foe je postmoderní román, ve kterém se Coetzee vrací k novele Robinson Crusoe od Daniela Defoea. Coetzee zde představuje alternativní verzi Defoeava příběhu, verzi, jež přináší několik zajímavých změn, které poukazují na určité úpravy, které Defoe záměrně provedl u původního románu. Práce analyzuje hlavní spojitosti Defoeova a Coetzeeho románu a dále se zaměřuje na rozbor dvou hlaních postav. Druhá polovina práce je věnována problematice autorství, která je s tímto dílem úzce spjata. V závěrečné části je analyzována řeč, jež byla přednesena při předávání Nobelovy ceny za literaturu právě za toto dílo (Foe).

Abstract:

This thesis critically analyzes the novel Foe, written by J. M. Coetzee. Foe is a postmodern novel in which Coetzee goes back to the novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Coetzee presents an alternative version of Defoe´s story. His version brings up many interesting alterations which point to some suspicious adjustements Defoe might have made to a different story. Coetzee suggests that Defoe, as a white, male writer has neglected the story of Susan Barton and of Friday. This work analyzes the main connections between Defoe´s and Coetzee´s versions. It focuses on the two main characters of the novel, the problem of authorship and the analysis of the Nobel lecture He and His Man presented by J. M. Coetzee.
