The Impact of GDP Growth on the Presidential Elections: The Case of the USA

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je důkladně prozkoumat vztah mezi procentuálním ziskem obhajující strany a růstem HDP v USA. Toto zkoumání je provedeno za účelem potvrzení nebo vyvrácení základní hypotézy teorie politicko-ekonomického cyklu (PBCT), která předpokládá, že voliči reagují na změny ekonomiky (tento předpoklad může být porušen zejména v kontextu nástupu rapidního růstu technologií během 21.století). K prokázání či vyvrácení hypotézy byly zkoumány za pomoci metody OLS prezidentské volby od roku 1948 do roku 2016. Vzhledem ke skutečnosti, že volby v letech 2000 a 2016 dopadly velmi těsným výsledkem, a dvě z nich byly rozhodnuty výsledky ve Swing státech, bylo rovněž zkoumáno za pomocí metody fixních efektů šest vybraných Swing států v letech 2000 až 2016. Ze závěru pro celonárodní volby vyplývá, že vztah mezi HDP a procentuálním ziskem strany obhajujícího prezidentského kandidáta je dostatečně robustní ve všech pozorovaných letech. Analýza Swing států však naznačuje, že vztah mezi HDP a procentuálním ziskem strany obhajujícího prezidentského kandidáta je v těchto státech slabší, byť stále pozitivní, než je tomu na celonárodní úrovni. Základní předpoklad PBCT tedy nebyl porušen.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to thoroughly examine the relationship between incumbent party vote share and growth of GDP in USA. This research is performed in order to confirm or disprove the basic assumption of the political business cycle theory (PBCT), that voters react to the changes of economy (this could be especially violated in light of rapid technological progress present in 21st century). In order to verify this hypothesis, there were chosen presidential election from 1948 to 2016 examined using the OLS. Due to the fact that elections from 2000 to 2016 were won by small margin and two of them were decided by Swing States results, there were also chosen six Swing States from 2000 to 2016 examined using fixed effect model. The conclusion for nationwide elections is that there is a fairly robust relationship between GDP and incumbent party vote share present in the observed years. An analysis of Swing States suggests that there is a weaker, but still positive, relationship between GDP and incumbent party vote share than there is for nationwide level. It turned out that the basic assumption of PBCT was confirmed.
