Analysis of Instrumental Indentation

Abstract:

Tato práce shrnuje nejdůležitější prvky v současné době velmi rychle se rozvíjející testovací metody materiálových věd - instrumentované indentace. Práce začína historickým přehledem představujícím instrumentovanou indentaci popisem jejího vývoje. Pokračuje úvodem do kontaktní mechaniky Hertze, teoretickým přehledem vlastní měřící metody a představením současné měřicí techniky využívající instrumentovanou indentaci ke studiu lokálních mechanických vlastností materiálů. Stěžejní kapitoly práce se zaměřují na situace a efekty, které musí být při analýze instrumentovanou metodou vždy uváženy nebo vhodně ošetřeny. Jsou to hlavně efekty týkající se velikosti vtisku (ISE), nakupení nebo poklesnutí materiálu vzorku kolem vtisku, vliv teploty a vlhkosti prostředí, vliv substrátu při zkoumání tenkých vrstev, kontakt mezi indentorem a drsným povrchem vzorku, nekolmý kontakt mezi indentorem a vzorkem, kalibrace měřícího přístroje, indentací vyvolané změny fáze, dvojčatění krystalů a strukturální poruchy, viskoelastické chování, vliv kontaminace, či vliv periodických struktur ve vzorku. Cílem práce je seznámit čtenáře s teorií, instrumentací a aplikací instrumentované indentace s důrazem na odhalení silných a slabých stránek metody.

Abstract:

This thesis captures essential elements of the, nowadays very fast developing, investigative method of material science -- instrumented indentation. The text opens with a historical overview introducing instrumented indentation by describing its evolution. It continues by presenting Hertzian contact mechanics, giving a theoretical overview of the method and reporting on the state-of-the-art in instrumentation using instrumented indentation to study local mechanical properties of materials. Eventually, it reaches its key chapters which focus on situations and effects that must be always considered and engaged during analysis. These are the indentation size effect, material pile-up and sink-in, environmental (temperature and humidity) effects, substrate influence in thin films testing, contact between indenter and rough surface, contact between indenter and sample with an inclined surface, instrument calibration, indentation induced phase transformations, crystal twinning, mechanical failures, viscoelastic behaviour, sample contamination or influence of periodic structures. The text focuses on theory, instrumentation as well as application of instrumented indentation with emphasis on exposing the method's strengths and weaknesses.
