Documentary Novel as a Specific Sub-genre of Modern Russian Historical Prose: Case Study of "Zimnaja doroga" by Leonid Yuzefovich

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of Russian documentary novel as a very specific branch of historical novel genre in Russia. The issue is analyzed basing on the "Zimnjaja doroga" novel by Leonid Juzefovich. The thesis has several aims stated here. First, the work is about to discuss exact examples of "documentary" traits in the text. Second, the thesis comments on the whole genre, and analyzes the way this genre is incorporated into contemporary Russian historical prose. Generally, the work strives for drafting the overall picture of the historical novel development in Russia, then analyzing documentary novel as a sub-genre of the historical novel, and describing exact examples of being such a sub-genre. The work is written in Russian language, and analytical approach is chosen here. The documentary novel is perceived as a specific genre that has no fixed boundaries. It often interferes with other literary genres, and the work with such a novel requires individual approach that just can not be generalized (although some valid general elements are found). However, the documentary / historical novel has its tradition in Russia, and nowadays it carries a certain degree of "historical national memory and consciousness", which is extremely important. The author of this paper outlines significant stages of the development of Russian historical and documentary novel. In addition, the researcher tries to specify the "peculiarities" and to outline major ideas of a documentary novel as the genre itself. Subsequently, the thesis tries to prove the conclusions gained with some exact examples, which might serve as a "manual" for any documentary novel. In conclusion, the author emphasizes the importance of the documentary novel as a sub-genre of the Russian historical novel for its so-called "historical memory (and consciousness)". Overall, the work should show the development of the documentary novel (as a distinct sub-genre of the historical novel) in Russia and characterize its basic and specific features and characteristics (which are subsequently illustrated by specific examples). One can suggest here, that the thesis might then serve as the basis for a more detailed research on the documentary novel in Russia.

Abstract:

Uvedená bakalářská práce se zabývá ruským dokumentárním románem jako specifikem vývoje historického románu v Rusku a snaží se na příkladu díla „Zimní cesta“ od autora Leonida Juzefoviče, ukázat konkrétní příklady „dokumentárnosti“, specifikovat celý žánr a začlenit jej do současné ruské historické prózy. Práce usiluje o ucelený obraz vývoje historického románu v Rusku, vyčlenění dokumentárního románu jako sub-žánru historického románu a na konkrétních příkladech z díla se snaží ukázat specifické vlastnosti a projevy tohoto sub-žánru. Práce je psána v Ruštině. Je zvolen analytický přístup. Dokumentární román je vnímán jako specifický žánr, jenž nemá pevně stanovené hranice. Často zasahuje i do dalších literárních žánrů a práce nad ním vyžaduje jistý zvláštní a osobitý přístup, který nelze generalizovat (lze ale nalézt platné obecné prvky). Nicméně dokumentární/historický román má v Rusku svoji tradici a v dnešní době v sobě nese i jistou míru „historické národní paměti a vědomí“, která je velmi důležitá. Autor této práce vyčleňuje ty nejdůležitější momenty ve vývoji ruského historického a dokumentárního románu, které popisuje. Dále se na základě daného vývoje snaží specifikovat „zvláštnosti“ dokumentárního románu a snaží se vyčlenit několik hlavních idejí a linií, které by mohli být platnými obecnými charakteristikami dokumentárního románu jako samotného žánru. Následně, se snaží tato svá tvrzení doložit konkrétními příklady z díla, které mu zároveň slouží jako „manuál“ k dokumentárnímu románu. V závěru autor vyzdvihuje důležitost dokumentárního románu jako sub-žánru historického románu v Rusku pro tzv. „historickou paměť a (s)vědomí“. Celá práce by tak měla ukázat vývoj dokumentárního románu (jako osobitého sub-žánru historického románu) v Rusku a charakterizovat jeho základní a specifické prvky a vlastnosti (které jsou následně doloženy konkrétními příklady). Práce by mohla poskytnout základ pro detailnější bádání v oblasti dokumentárního románu v Rusku.
