V posledních letech je k segmentaci obrazových dat často využívána metoda aktivních kontur. Jedná se o matematicky dobře založenou metodu, jejíž princip je založen na minimalizaci vhodně definovaného energetického funkcionálu. Parametric active contours are the popular approach to image segmentation because of their computational efficiency and simplicity. The active contour is described as a B-spline curve that evolves from an initial position toward the salient features in image in such a way as to minimize the sum of external (image) energy and internal (curve) energy.
