Objective video quality assessment of streaming services

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce analyzuje vybrané služby pro streamování videa. V teoretické části se zaměřuje na historii, porovnání charakteru, obsahové zaměření a technické možnosti vybra-ných streamovacích služeb (YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Twitch, Pornhub a xHamster). Jsou zmíněny technické specifikace ukládání a komprimace videa a dále jsou popsány používané metody k objektivnímu porovnání kvality videa (PSNR-HVS-M, MS-SSIM a VMAF). V praktické části jsou na základě vybraných metod porovnány streamovací službou modifikované a referenční video soubory v rozlišeních UHD a Full HD. Jednotlivé výsledky testovaných služeb jsou poté mezi sebou srovnány. V rozlišení UHD dopadla nejlépe služba Dailymotion a u Full HD rozlišení služba Vimeo. V obou případech byla nejhůře vyhodnocena platforma Pornhub. Rozdíly mezi jednotlivými platformami nejsou markantní. Pokud bychom vzali v potaz i hledisko velikosti výstupního souboru, tak služba Youtube s formátem VP9 poskytuje videa v menší velikosti, ale se zachováním podobné kvality obrazu jako u platforem Dailymotion a Vimeo.

Abstract:

The Bachelor thesis analyses selected video streaming services. The theoretical part focuses on the history, character comparison, content focus and technical capabilities of streaming services (YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Twitch, Pornhub and xHamster). The technical specifications for the video storage and compression are described. Methods used for the objective comparison of the video quality (PSNR-HVS-M, MS-SSIM and VMAF) are explained. In the practical part, the modified and reference video files in UHD and Full HD resolutions are compared based on the selected methods, and the results of the tested services are compared with each other. Dailymotion performed the best in UHD resolution and Vimeo in Full HD. In both cases, the Pornhub platform was the worst evaluated. The differences between the platforms are not significant. If we take into account the size of the output file, Youtube with the VP9 format provides videos in a smaller size but keeping similar image quality as the Dailymotion and Vimeo platforms.
