Abstract:

The British Empire was the largest empire in history and it started to decline after the First World War. This thesis compares Ireland?s and India?s struggle for independence from the British during the Empire?s gradual fall. British India became an official colony in 1858 and by the end of the 19th century, the Indians started a national movement to gain independence. This was achieved in 1947, when the colony was divided into two states: India and Pakistan. Ireland partially got under the English control already in the 12th century. To suppress the Irish attempts to become a republic, the British established the Union of the UK and Ireland in 1800. The Irish did eventually succeed in gaining full independence in 1937, and their country was officially a republic in 1949.

Od konce 19. století do začátku 20. století, Britské Impérium bylo největším impériem v historii a začalo updata po první světové válce. Tato práce srovnává boj Irů a Indů za nezávislost v průběhu postupného pádu říše. Britská Indie se oficiálně stala kolonií v roce 1858 a koncem 19. století Indové začali národní hnutí za nezávislost. Toho dosáhli v roce 1947, když byla kolonie rozdělena do dvou států: Indie a Pákistán. Irsko bylo částečně ovládáno Angličany už ve 12. století. Aby potlačili irské snahy o založení republiky, založili Britové Unii Velké Británie a Irska v roce 1800. Irové nakonec uspěli v získání úplné nezávislosti v roce 1937 a oficiálně získali statut republiky v roce 1949.
