The mediation of the makeup application in YouTube tutorials

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis explores the language of YouTube videos that focus on make-up application, so-called make-up tutorials. The aim of the thesis is to find out what specific linguistic devices and strategies are used in these videos to mediate the process of make-up application. For the purposes of this analysis, transcripts of two YouTube videos that can be classified as make-up tutorials were first prepared. Subsequently, the videos were subjected to discourse analysis. The theoretical part of the thesis first examines online communication, the YouTube platform, online celebrities and the genre of make-up tutorials. Furthermore, the attention is paid to the language and characteristic features of live broadcasting on television. The analytical part of this bachelor thesis first introduces the collected material and the method of discourse analysis and then presents the results of the analysis of the two selected videos. The analysis identified the characteristic linguistic features and strategies of YouTube make-up tutorials that help to build their liveness, increase their interactivity and present the YouTuber in the role of a friend as well as an expert. The main finding of the thesis is that YouTube make-up tutorials share common features with live broadcasting in traditional media, but also have their own characteristics, especially in the area of self-presentation of the influencer.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá jazyk YouTube videí, která se zaměřují na aplikaci make-upu, tzv. make-up tutoriály. Cílem práce je zjistit, jakými konkrétními jazykovými prostředky a strategiemi je v těchto videích zprostředkován postup aplikace make-upu. Pro účely této analýzy byly vypracovány transkripty dvou YouTube videí, která je možno žánrově zařadit jako make-up tutoriály. Následně byla videa podrobena diskurzivní analýze. Teoretická část práce se nejprve věnuje online komunikaci, platformě YouTube, online celebritám a žánru make-up tutoriálů. Dále je pozornost věnována jazyku a charakteristickým znakům živého vysílání v televizi. Analytická část této bakalářské práce jako první představuje sesbíraný materiál a metodu diskurzivní analýzy a následně prezentuje výsledky analýzy dvou vybraných videí. Analýza identifikovala charakteristické jazykové prostředky a strategie YouTube make-up tutoriálů, které napomáhají budovat jejich živost, zvyšují interaktivitu videí a prezentují YouTubera v roli kamaráda a také experta. Hlavním zjištěním práce je, že YouTube make-up tutoriály sdílejí společné znaky s živým vysíláním v tradičních médiích, ale také se vyznačují vlastními charakteristikami, především v oblasti sebe-prezentace influencera.
