Společnost v průběhu progresivní éry čelila mnohým změnám a zmocňoval se jí pocit, že ztrácí kontrolu. Mnoho žen věřilo, že je jejich povinností vyčistit společnost od příkoří industrializace a urbanizace, jakým byla např. dětská práce, skrze různá hnutí, kluby nebo odbory.
