Life as a Hairy Cactus Slapsticks and Battles of Josef Gruss

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá životem a uměleckou tvorbou Josefa Grusse (1908−1971). Josef Gruss je znám především jako herec vedlejších rolí v předválečných veselohrách. Ve skutečnosti byl ale renesanční osobností: spisovatelem humoristických románů, scenáristou, textařem (Jen pro ten dnešní den) a po čtyřicet let členem činohry Národního divadla. Spolu s E. F. Burianem založil avantgardní levicový kabaret Červené eso. Věnoval se práci pro rozhlas i televizi. Grussova jediná filmová režie snímku Hostinec „U kamenného stolu“ (1948), jehož produkční historie je představena, fatálně ovlivnila jeho poválečnou karieru. Analyzován je kulturní přínos Josefa Grusse v kontextu politické a sociální situace první poloviny 20. století. Závěrečná část práce představí i detaily z jeho osobního života − prostřednictvím materiálů z pozůstalosti, především nedopsaných a nikdy nezveřejněných memoárů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the life and work of Josef Gruss (1908−1971). Gruss is commonly known as an actor of supporting roles in pre-war comedies. But he was also a writer of humorous novels, screenwriter, lyricist and for about forty years an eminent actor of the National Theater. He also took his part in the foundation of political avant-garde cabaret The Red Ace. His only movie direction, a successful comedy The Stone Table Inn, dramatically affected his post-war career. This thesis analyses the cultural contribution of Josef Gruss to a field of cinema, theatre and literature and relieves his unknown life stories before and after the year 1945. It uses unique materials from the estate of Josef Gruss including his never published memoirs.
