The Reader and the Narrator in Czech Prose of the 1990's

Abstract:

V první polovině devadesátých let se v české próze projevuje nezanedbatelný trend k sebereflexivitě a k tematizaci procesu psaní, jehož důsledkem je i tematizace čtenáře a komunikace mezi vypravěčem a čtenářem. Tyto postupy jsou v této době charakteristické i pro romány Jiřího Kratochvila a Michala Viewegha, dvou autorů, jejichž texty jsou si jinak svými myšlenkovými světy značně vzdálené. Prostřednictvím analýzy textů obou autorů, zaměřené především na strategii vyprávění, vztah mezi vypravěčem vystupujícím v roli autora a různými podobami čtenáře, především jeho podobou tematizovanou a strukturní, se tato práce pokouší postihnout některé obecnější tendence objevující se v próze tohoto období, jako je „literalizace“ reality a autentizace fikčních světů nebo narušování hranice mezi světem literárním a mediálním.

Abstract:

In the early 1990´s, a strong tendency to self-reflexivity and thematizing of the process of writing appears in the Czech prose. This tendency, bringing up methods like thematizing the role of the reader and communication between the narrator and the reader, is namely characteristic of the style of Jiri Kratochvil and Michal Viewegh, while in other respects the worlds of their novels are strikingly far apart. By means of textual analyses, focused especially on the strategy of narration, the relationship between the narrator taking up the role of the creator of the text on one side and various projections of the reader on the other, and – last but not least – on the discrepancy between the thematized and the “hidden” structural reader, this work attempts to discover and point out more general tendencies in the literature of the period (“literalization” of reality and “authentization” of the fictional world; intentional trespassing of the conventional borders between the world of literature and mass media etc.).
