Spiritual dimension in the work of Gary Snyder

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis analyses the spirituality in the selected works of a California author Gary Snyder, who integrates spiritual influences of Native Americans and Zen Buddhism. Spirituality is defined in one of the opening chapters by finding a common ground among various conceptions of this phenomenon. It is followed by a biographical chapter that features the key moments of the author?s life that were to determine his spiritual path. The literary analysis of Gary Snyder?s spirituality is organized into four thematic chapters: first, attention is paid to the issue of identity, then to the community of beings, the transcendental experiences of the sacred, and finally the integrity of the author?s spiritual vision will be addressed.

Rigorózní práce analyzuje spiritualitu ve vybraných dílech kalifornského autora Garyho Snydera, který v nich spojuje zejména spirituální vlivy severoamerických indiánů a Zen Buddhismu. Spiritualita je definována v úvodní kapitole na základě průniku různých pojetí tohoto fenoménu. Následuje biografická kapitola, která shrnuje právě ty momenty autorova života, které hrály významnou roli v jeho duchovním rozvoji. Samotný literární rozbor spirituality Garyho Snydera je uspořádán do čtyř tematických kapitol: nejdříve bude pozornost věnována otázce identity, poté vztahu ke komunitě, dále pak transcendentálním prožitkům posvátna, a nakonec bude zhodnocena soudržnost spirituální vize v díle autora.
