New tendencies in RP: Czech secondary school materials

Abstract:

Hlavní oblastí této diplomové práce je fonetika a fonologie britské angličtiny se zvláštním zaměřením na segmentální aspekt standartní výslovnosti (RP) a proces lingvistických změn. Výzkum byl zaměřen na hledání nových tendencí standartní výslovnosti, tak jak je navrhl Clive Upton po roce 1980, ve studijních materiálech používaných na středních školách v Pardubickém kraji, které byly publikovány po roce 2000. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. Teoretická část popisuje vývoj pojmu ‘Received Pronunciation‘ (standartní výslovnost), jak je výslovnost zapojena do procesu jazykové změny a upozorňuje na význam výuky aktualizovaného modelu standartní výslovnosti ve školách. Dále je prezentován Uptonův model aktualizované standartní výslovnosti a detailněji rozebrány některé z rysů tohoto modelu, které jsou hodny větší pozornosti. Výzkum se zakládá na reprezentativním vzorku dvaceti knih a jejich audio materiálů, shromážděných díky pomoci škol, které se zúčastnili této studie. V nahrávkách bylo pozorováno a analyzováno osm z nejvýznamnějších rysů Uptonova modelu nové standartní výslovnosti s cílem zjistit, do jaké míry se nové tendence ve výslovnosti již objevují ve studijních materiálech. Celkově si práce klade za cíl potvrdit hypotézu, že ač bylo v osmdesátých letech dvacátého století potvrzeno Uptonem a mnoha dalšími linguisty, že anglická výslovnost prošla velkou změnou, zavést nové tendence do příruček a učebnic trvá nejméně dvacet až 25 let. Tato hypotéza je založena na tvrzení Bauera (1984), že příručky jsou zastaralé a to nejméně o jednu generaci.

Abstract:

The main area of this thesis is the phonetics and phonology of British English with special focus on segmental aspect of Received Pronunciation and the process of linguistic change. The research was aimed at finding new tendencies in Received Pronuncaition as proposed by Clive Upton in the 1980s in the EFL study materials used at secondary schools in Pardubice region that were published after the year 2000. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical section outlines the development of the term Received Pronunciation, it discusses how the standard pronunciation is involved in the process of linguistic change and the importance of teaching the updated RP model at schools. Later the Upton’s theory is presented and the patterns deserving higher attention are dealt with. The practical section offers the analysis of the audio samples of 20 books collected from the participating schools. The goal of the analysis is to find eight significant phonetic patterns in each of the books and determine whether they follow Upton’s model of RP or whether their realisation sticks to the traditional RP. This allows us to detect to what extent the new tendencies already appear in the course books. Overall, the thesis aims to confirm the hypothesis that although confirmed in 1980s by Upton and many other linguists that English pronunciation has undergone a great linguistic change there is a one generation gap in introducing these changes into the EFL study materials. This hypothesis is based on Bauer’s claim (1984) ‘that the handbooks are practically a generation out of date’ (Przedlacka 2005: 19).
