Modeling European Pleistocene vegetation based on modern analogues from Siberia

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si kladla za cíl vytvořit soubor modelů, které by pomohly vytvořit bližší představu o tom, jaká vegetace se vyskytovala v evropské krajině v období kulminace poslední doby ledové. K tomuto účelu byly využity poznatky o současném rozšíření hlavních vegetačních typů na Sibiři, tedy oblasti, o níž se předpokládá, že by mohla být vhodnou klimatickou analogií pleistocenní Evropy. Kombinací tří základních složek – záznamů o současném výskytu vegetačních typů na Sibiři, údajů o přírodních poměrech a také korelačního algoritmu MaxEnt – byly identifikovány vhodné habitaty pro celkem 21 vegetačních typů na současné Sibiři a posléze také v pleistocenní Evropě. Při ověřování analogie klimatu mezi současnou Sibiří a pleistocenní Evropou však bylo zjištěno, že pouze oblasti východní a částečně také střední Evropy jsou pro modelování vhodné. Také další nejistoty zprvu nasvědčovaly tomu, že vzniklé modely nemusí být spolehlivé. Při srovnání výsledných modelů s výsledky předchozích paleoekologických rekonstrukcí bylo však zjištěno, že se většinou vzájemně velmi dobře shodují. Bylo tedy například potvrzeno, že klimatické podmínky skutečně umožňovaly růst stromů severně od Alp a že pestrost lesních ekosystému byla pravděpodobně největší na území dnešní Ukrajiny a v evropské části Ruska.

Abstract:

The aim of this master thesis was to develop a set of models which would help to create a closer idea of what vegetation had actually occurred in the European landscape during the culmination of the last ice age. For this purpose, knowledge of current distribution of the major vegetation types in Siberia, the area which is supposed to be an appropriate climate analogue of the Pleistocene Europe, was utilized. By combination of three basic components – records of contemporary occurrence of vegetation types in Siberia, data on natural conditions and correlation algorithm MaxEnt – suitable habitats for altogether 21 vegetation types were identified in Siberia and afterwards in the Pleistocene Europe. When verifying the analogy of climate between contemporary Siberia and Pleistocene Europe it was ascertained that only areas of eastern and partially also central Europe were suitable for modeling. Also other uncertainties were initially suggestive of the fact that the created models may not have been reliable. However, when comparing the resulting models with the results of previous paleoecological reconstructions it was revealed that they usually coincided with each other very well. It was therefore for example confirmed that climatic conditions had really enabled the growth of trees north of the Alps and that diversity of forest ecosystems had probably been greatest in present-day Ukraine and the European part of Russia.
