Siding of Whorl Dermatoglyphic Patterns on Fingers

Abstract:

Dermatoglyfické vzory na bříškách prstů ruky jsou radio-ulnárně asymetrické, tj. vykazují systematické rozdíly mezi radiální a ulnární stranou prstu. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo zpracovat soubor otisků s vírovými vzory a nalézt charakteristické znaky, které by mohly sloužit ke stranovému určení osamocených otisků na základě jejich radio-ulnární asymetrie. Studovaný soubor představovalo 1241 otisků bříšek distálních článků prstů s vírovým vzorem od 402 Lužických Srbů a Čechoslováků (204 mužů a 198 žen) z depozitáře Ústavu antropologie Přírodovědecké fakulty v Brně. Pro každý typ vírového vzoru (prostý vír, dvojsmyčka, centrální kapsa) bylo definováno několik potenciálně radio-ulnárně asymetrických znaků. Ve všech sledovaných znacích pro stranové určení otisku byla zaznamenána stranová odlišnost vyplývající z radio-ulnární asymetrie znaků. U prostých vírů bylo nejvýraznější stranové odlišení ve znaku rotace typu counter-clockwise (v 91,24 % na pravé ruce), u dvojsmyček ve znaku sklon jádra typu doprava (94,21 % na pravé ruce). V případě centrálních kapes většina sledovaných znaků vykázala odlišení nízké. Nejlepší stranové odlišení bylo vždy zjištěno, když byly sledovány dva znaky společně, například kombinace znaků kolmice a sklon jádra typu vlevo-doprava pocházela ve 100 % případů z pravé ruky a tato asymetrie byla vysoce statisticky významná (p<0,01). Výsledky této studie přispívají k dosavadním znalostem o radio-ulnární asymetrii smyček a vírů a navrhují nové znaky vírových vzorů, které mohou najít praktické použití při identifikaci a klasifikaci otisků.

Abstract:

Dermatoglyphic patterns on fingertips show radio-ulnar asymmetry, i. e. they exhibit systematic differences between radial and ulnar side of a finger. The main aim of this thesis was to analyze sample of fingerprints with whorl pattern and identify characteristic traits, which could be used to determine side and hand of origin of an isolated fingerprint using its radio-ulnar asymmetry. Studied sample consisted of total number of 1241 fingerprints with whorl patterns from 402 Lusatian Serbs and Czechoslovaks (204 females and 198 males) that is deposited at the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University. Potentially asymmetric specific traits were defined for each type of whorl pattern (whorl, double loop, central pocket). Differences resulting from radio-ulnar asymmetry were observed in all studied traits. Obtained results suggest that the most distinctive traits are counter-clockwise type of ridge course (91.24 % on the right hand) for whorls, and the rightward slope of the core (94.21 % on the right hand) for double loops. Most of the traits defined for central pockets exhibited very low between-side variation. The best determination of side of origin of fingerprint was observed when two of specific traits were observed together, e.g. left-rightward form of the combination of perpendicular line and slope of the core was observed in 100 % instances on the right hand and the asymmetry was highly statistically significant (p<0.01). Results of this thesis contribute to existing knowledge about radio-ulnar asymmetry and variability of loops and whorls and introduce new traits in whorl patterns that could be practically used in fingerprint identification and classification.
