Babywatching in Preschool to prevent Aggression, and to promote Empathy: Connections with theory of mind

Abstract:

Předložená práce se zabývá zavedením preventivního a intervenčního programu B.A.S.E – Babywatching do české mateřské školy. Ověřovali jsme vliv tohoto programu na problémové chování dětí a dále zjišťovali vliv na schopnost teorie mysli. Výzkum měl kvaziexperimentální design, s pre-testem, post-testem, experimentální a kontrolní skupinou. Předpokládali jsme, na základě předchozích výzkumů a dalších výzkumných a teoretických souvislostí, že se u experimentální skupiny výrazněji sníží problémové chování a zvýší schopnost teorie mysli oproti skupině kontrolní. Intervence probíhala po dobu půl roku v experimentální skupině na vzorku 14 dětí. Kontrolní skupina čítala taktéž 14 dětí. Pro měření problematického chování byl zvolen Strengths and difficulties questionnaire (vyplňovali jej jak rodiče, tak učitelé). Pro měření teorie mysli jsme využili škálu teorie mysli od Wellmana a Liu. Nebyl nalezen významný rozdíl ve změně problematického chování mezi experimentální a kontrolní skupinou. Rovněž nebyla podpořena hypotéza o rozdílu ve zvýšení schopnosti teorie mysli mezi experimentální a kontrolní skupinou. K tomuto výsledku výrazně přispěla nedostatečná velikost zkoumaného vzorku snižující sílu použitých testů. Na základě této práce tedy nelze usuzovat na neefektivitu programu a je nezbytné se dále zabývat replikačními studiemi s větším vzorkem.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with implementing the preventive and intervention program B.A.S.E - Babywatching into the Czech kindergarten. We aimed to verify the impact of this program on the behavioral problems of children, and also found out the effect on the ability of the theory of mind. The research had quasi-experimental design, pre-test, post-test, experimental and control group. Based on previous research and theoretical contexts, we asseumed the experimental group will reduce the problem behavior and increase the ability of the theory of mind more than the control group. The intervention lasted for six months in an experimental group on a sample of 14 children. The control group also consisted of 14 children. Strengths and difficulties questionnaire was chosen to measure problematic behavior (parents and teachers filled it out). For measuring theory of mind was used Wellman and Liu theory of mind scale. No significant difference was found in the change in problematic behavior between the experimental and the control group. Also, the hypothesis of the difference in increasing the ability of the theory of mind between the experimental and the control group was not supported. This result was caused by insufficient sample size and low power of tests. Based on this research, therefore, the inefficiency of the program can not be considered, and it is necessary to replicate study with a larger sample size.
