Code switching strategy among Czech speakers of English

Abstract:

In this bachelor thesis I focus on the phenomenon of code-switching and borrowing occurring in the communication between Czech speakers of English. The theoretical part of this thesis discusses the problematics of defining bilingualism and describes some of the expert views on who is and who isn't a bilingual. Next, I summarize the history of second-language acquisition research and describe some of the most influential second-language acquisition theories. Then I focus on the sociolinguistic and psychological aspect of bilingualism and the influence of modern communication on code-switching. Finally, I focus on the language modes of bilinguals, define code-switching, code-mixing, and borrowing and move on to the purposes of code-switching from the sociolinguistic point of view. The practical part consists of a questionnaire that focuses on the investigation of why and how do Czech-English bilinguals code-switch and of an analysis of authentic examples. The results are compared with the sociolinguistic purposes for code-switching and psychological purposes of code-switching from the theoretical part.

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se zaměřuji na fenomén střídání kódů a výpůjček vyskytujících se v komunikaci mezi českými mluvčími angličtiny. Teoretická část této práce se zabývá problematikou definování bilingvismu a popisuje některé pohledy odborníků na to, kdo je a kdo není bilingvní. Poté shrnuji historii výzkumu získávání druhého jazyka a popisuji některé z nejvlivnějších teorií o získávání druhého jazyka. Dále se zaměřuji na sociolingvistický a psychologický aspekt bilingvismu a vliv moderní komunikace na střídání kódů. Nakonec popisuji jazykové módy bilingvních osob, definuji pojmy střídání kódů, mixování kódů a výpůjčky a přecházím k účelům střídání kódů ze sociolingvistického hlediska. Praktická část sestává z dotazníku, který se zaměřuje na zkoumání toho, proč a jak čeští mluvčí angličtiny střídají mezi kódy a z rozboru autentických projevů. Výsledky jsou porovnány se sociolingvistickými a psychologickými účely pro střídání kódů z teoretické části.
