Logo design and orientation system for Lodenica

Abstract:

The main focus of my Bachelor's Thesis is a corporate identity of a shipyard. Since I love sports, I decided to create an original branding for a completely new shipyard, called Bluespace. At the very beginning of the creative process, I wrote down the goals so that I can return to them during the next phases of my work. I divided the project into six parts: Basic elements, Typography, Corporate forms, Identification, Online communication and Promotional items. As a next step, I created a mood board, also with the aim to return to it during later stages and think about my inspiration and motivation. The next phase included the creation of a basic concept. I started with drawing some sketches. After finding the main visual identity of the whole branding, the base of which are lines, I started creating vector illustrations. As for Typography, I chose the Arkhip as primary font, because of its unconventional shape and originality. The second font I used was Helvetica Neue. As for the colours, I wanted to be more traditional, so I chose four shades of a colour typical for shipyards: blue. After I chose the fonts and colours for the main visual identity, I started working on a logo, which took me a lot of time and energy. I came up with several ideas, combining the elements like houses, waves, ships, kayaks, paddles, river, or letter B. Finally, after consulting with my supervisor, we selected a symbol typical for a shipyard: a kayaker. Having the logo allowed me to start working on Corporate forms, like letterhead, business cards, envelopes and stamps. I used the same design for all of them. Then I started with preparing the Identification campaign, so that people who had never hear of the Bluespace shipyard would learn about the brand from the objects and places surrounding them. This included car stickers, posters, flags, maps, pictograms, and interior decorations. In the next phase, I focused on Online communication, which included emails, CDs and DVDs, website, mobile app and Facebook page. Creating the Promotional items belongs to my favourite parts of the creative process, because it allows me to use my design on a wide range of products. In this case, I opted for key rings, badges, USB drives, cups, bottles, postcards, socks, caps, T-shirts and bags. Finally, I needed to prepare the most important item on the list: a design manual. It shows how the logo can and cannot be used. The design manual contains all the information about the whole creative process and the methods I used when preparing this Bachelor's Thesis. To sum it up, I tried to come up with an all-embracing work, focusing especially on clean, modern and simple aspects of design. These principles are crucial for my work. The branding I created can become part of the corporate strategy of a shipyard. I am already preparing for a meeting with the owner of Lodenica to present him my project, and hope it will be successful.

Abstract:

V mojej bakalárskej práci som pracovala na korporátnej identite pre lodenicu. Na základe toho, že milujem šport, som sa rozhodla vytvoriť originálny branding pre úplne novú lodenicu Bluespace. Na úplnom začiatku som začala s kreatívnou prípravou. Na tomto projekte som pracovala rovnako ako som zvyknutá. Na papier som si napísala svoje ciele, a počas projektu som sa k nim vracala. Rozdelila som si tento projekt do 6 častí: základné prvky, typografia, firemné tlačoviny, identifikácia, on-line komunikácia a propagačné predmety. Zároveň som si vytvorila aj moodboard, ku ktorej som sa mohla počas celého projektu vracať, a pozerať sa na svoju inšpiráciu a moiváciu. Následne som potrebova vytvoriť koncept. Najskôr som si začala kresliť skice na papier. Potom, keď už som vedela čo bude hlavný prvok vizuálnej identity - linky, som začala vytvárať vektorové ilustrácie. Ako primárnu typografiu som zvolila font Arkhip, kvôli jeho nekonvenčným tvarom a originalite. Sekundárnym fontom sa stala Helvetica Neue. Farebnosť som zvolila veľmi typickú pre lodenicu - 4 odtiene modrej. Na logu som začala pracovať po vytvorení hlavnej identity. Zabralo mi to skutočne veľa času, kým vzniklo finálne logo. Vytvorila som mnoho návrhov ktoré obsahovali napr: domy, vlnky, lode, kajaky, pádla, rieky, písmeno B a pod. Po konzultáciach s vedúcim práce, sme sa rozhodli ísť cestou ktorá je najjasnejšia pre lodenicu - kajakár. Potom som začala pracovať na firemných tlačovinách ktoré obsahovali: hlavičkový papier, vizitky, pohľadnice a tlačítko. Všetko vzniklo na základe zadefinovaného vizuálneho štýlu. Nesôr, som mohla začať s identifikáciou pre lodenicu. To znamená, že keď niekto nikdy nepočul o lodenici Bluespace, zrazu ho začne obklopovať všade. Takže táto časť pozostáva z: polepu áut, plagátu, vlajok, mapy, piktogramov a dekorácie interiéru. Následne som sa pustila do Online komunikácie, ktorá obsahovala: e-mail, CD a DVD, webstránku, mobilnú aplikáciu a facebook. Jedna z mojich oblúbených častí, pri tvorení vizuálnej identity sú propagačné predmety, pretože na ne môžem aplikovať dizajn kt. som vytvorila. Takže som sa rozhodla vytvoriť: kľúčenku, odznaky, USB, šáľku, fľašu, pohľadnice, ponožky, šiltovku, tričká a tašku. Poslednú a najdôložitejšiu časť, ktorú bolo potrebné vytvoriť bol dizajn manuál, ktorému som dala formu knihy. Ukázala som v ňom ako logo môže byť použité a ako nie. Jednoducho som do dizajn manuálu umiestnila všetko, čo v priebehu bakalárskej práce vzniklo. Vo všeobecnosti, som sa snažila spraviť komplexnú prácu, kde som venovala špeciálnu pozornosť čistému, modernému a jednoduchemu dizajnu. Tieto hodnoty sú moje kľúčové princípy v celej dizajnovej práci. Myslím si že tento projekt je vhodný pre vizuálnu identitu lodenice. Chystám sa na stretnurie s majiteľom, ohľadom realizácie tohto projektu, a verím, že bude úspešný.
