Characterization of chemical composition of urban aerosol

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá stanovením kovů v atmosférickém aerosolu. Při řešení problematiky byly použity dva přístupy stanovení kovů v atmosférickém aerosolu - kontinuální a diskontinuální uspořádání. Kontinuální metoda byla studována a vyvinuta pro modelové kovy Fe3+, Cu2+ a Co2+. Pro vzorkování kovů byl použit aerosolový kolektor určený pro záchyt aerosolů do deionizované vody. Kovy byly po záchytu zakoncentrovány na zakoncentrovávací koloně a následně separovány systémem HPLC a detekovány chemiluminiscenční průtokovou metodou založenou na reakci luminolu s peroxidem vodíku v alkalickém prostředí. Vyvinutá kontinuální metoda byla testována generováním aerosolu v laboratorních podmínkách. Bylo také provedeno porovnání s referenčně používanou off-line metodou, která využívá odběr aerosolu na filtr s následným rozkladem v koncentrovaných anorganických kyselinách a stanovením atomovou absorpční spektrometrií. Vyvinutý kontinuální systém byl následně použit k analýze reálných vzorků atmosférického aerosolu v Brně. Diskontinuální technika byla použita pro vzorkování aerosolů na filtry, koncentrace kovů v odebraných aerosolech byly detekovány pomocí ICP-MS, výsledky získané touto technikou byly pak využity při identifikaci emisních zdrojů atmosférických aerosolů. Odběry vzorků atmosférického aerosolu byly provedeny v zimě a v létě roku 2009 a 2010 v průběhu jednoho týdne na zvolených lokalitách v Brně a ve Šlapanicích. Vzorky aerosolů byly zachytávány na nitrátcelulózové filtry prostřednictvím velkoobjemového vzorkovače DHA-80 (30 m3.h-1; Digitel) vybaveného odběrovou hlavicí pro frakci PM1. Exponované filtry byly rozloženy v koncentrované kyselině dusičné a extrakty byly analyzovány na obsah vybraných 14 kovů (Pb, K, Ca, Zn, Fe, Ba, Al, Mn, Ni, Cu, Sb, As, Cd a V) pomocí ICP-MS. Identifikace zdrojů atmosférického aerosolu byla provedena na základě diagnostických poměrů vybraných kovů a s využitím statistických metod.

Abstract:

This Ph.D. thesis deals with determination of metals in atmospheric aerosol. Two different methods were used for determination of the elements in atmospheric aerosol – continuous and discontinuous. The potential of continuous method was studied and was developed using Fe3+, Cu2+, and Co2+ as model metals in atmospheric aerosols. This system combines the continuous sampling of atmospheric aerosols into deionized water using the aerosol counterflow two-jets unit and on-line chemiluminescent detection of water soluble fraction of metals in collected aerosols. Before determination the metals were preconcentrated by preconcentration column and then separated by HPLC system. The chemiluminescence detection is based on reaction of luminol with hydrogen peroxide in alkaline solution. The developed continuous technique was tested with aerosol, which was generated by laboratory conditions. The comparison with reference off-line method, which is based on sampling of aerosol onto filtr, followed by acid decomposition, and atomic absorption spectrometry determination, was done, too. In addition, the continuous method was applied to the measurement of selected metals in urban aerosols in Brno (Czech Republic). Discontinuous technique was used for aerosol sampling onto filters, metals concentrations in these samples were analysed by ICP-MS. Obtained results were used for identification of potencial sources of atmospheric aerosols. Samples of atmospheric aerosol were collected during one week in summer and winter season of the year 2009 and 2010. Two localities were choosen for this purpose, the first one was in Brno and the second one was in Šlapanice (Czech Republic). The nitratecelulose filter was used for aersol sampling. The equipments were composed of high-volume sampler DHA-80 (30 m3.h-1; Digitel) equipped with PM1 inlet. The exponated filters were decomposed by nitric acid and than were analysed by ICP-MS for content of 14 metals (Pb, K, Ca, Zn, Fe, Ba, Al, Mn, Ni, Cu, Sb, As, Cd, and V). Identification of potencial sources was performed by select ratio of the metals and using statistical methods.
