Seniors and their view of intimacy

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem seniorů a jejich pohledem na intimitu. Součástí práce je teoretické zakotvení tématu, které se zaměřuje na stáří, stárnutí, seniory a intimitu, stejně jako na faktory ovlivňující intimitu u seniorů, vliv médií a ageismu na téma intimity u osob starších 65 let. Dále zkoumá pohled seniorů na intimitu a navrhuje řešení na uchopení tématu v rámci sociální práce. Pomocí analýzy kvalitativních polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se sedmi zástupci cílové skupiny 65+ jsem se zaměřila na jejich vlastní pojetí tématu intimity a mýtů, které kolem tématu panují. Touto prací chci nastínit problematiku stereotypizace intimity u seniorů, která je ovlivněna nízkou informovaností veřejnosti, samotnými seniory, médii a ageismem. Vzhledem k narůstajícímu počtu seniorů v naší společnosti se jedná o oblast, kterou by se sociální práce a veřejnost měla zabývat, protože potřeba intimity je jednou ze základních lidských potřeb v každém věku, bez ohledu na zdravotní stav a formu projevu. Cílem práce je návrh řešení, jak s tématem pracovat v rámci sociální práce se seniory. Sociální pracovník by měl být schopen aktivního naslouchání a otevřeného dialogu s klienty seniorského věku v průběhu práce s touto cílovou skupinou. Podstatným nástrojem samotného sociálního pracovníka je jeho reflexe, schopnost autenticity, respektu a otevřenosti ke klientům. Převážná část participantů uvedla, že intimitu u seniorů vnímají pozitivně, jako součást lidského bytí, jako vyjádření svých niterných potřeb, ať už v rámci rodiny nebo okruhu přátel. Intimitu vnímají jako niternou potřebu, záležitost, o které je nutné vést rovnocenné debaty, které pomohou téma intimity u seniorské populace legitimizovat a normalizovat.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of seniors and their view on intimacy. The thesis includes a theoretical grounding of the topic, which focuses on old age, aging, seniors and intimacy, factors affecting intimacy in seniors, the influence of media and ageism on the topic of intimacy in people over 65. It also explores seniors' perspectives on intimacy and proposes solutions to grasp the topic within social work. Through the analysis of qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven representatives of the 65+ target group, I focused on their own perceptions of the topic of intimacy and the myths surrounding the topic. Through this work I want to outline the issue of stereotyping intimacy among seniors, which is influenced by low public awareness, seniors themselves, the media and ageism. Given the increasing number of seniors in our society, this is an area that social work and the public should address, as the need for intimacy is one of the basic human needs at any age, regardless of health status or form of expression. The aim of this thesis is to propose a solution to deal with the topic in social work with the elderly. The social worker should be able to actively listen and have an open dialogue with elderly clients in the course of working with this target group. An essential tool of the social worker himself is his reflection, the ability to be authentic, respectful and open to the clients. The majority of respondents stated that they perceive intimacy with seniors positively, as part of being human, as an expression of their inner needs, whether within the family or circle of friends. They perceive intimacy as an intrinsic need, an issue that needs to be debated on an equal footing to help legitimize and normalize the topic of intimacy in the senior population.
