Interpreting the Symbols of Nationalism, Dystopia and Totalitarianism in George Orwell's 1984

Abstract:

The novel 1984 is commonly understood as a vision of a totalitarian society. However, this thesis attempts to explain that the novel 1984 should be instead understood as a moralistic piece of literature meant to serve as a critique of society in which Orwell himself had lived. The thesis will also show various elements of nationalism, dystopia, and totalitarianism, as the reasons behind the success of the novel, and will additionally portray how exactly Orwell intended this critique of society to be understood. The thesis explores symbols of nationalism, dystopia, and totalitarianism portrayed in the novel 1984 in order to explain that by the use of these elements, Orwell intended to point out the main moralistic problems which he perceived in the society in which he lived, that being oppression, inequality, and the worship of authority. Before exploring these elements in-depth, background information in regard to moralistic problems in Orwell's time will be included in the theoretical part, together with background information related to Orwell and brief definitions of nationalism, dystopia, and totalitarianism. Following this, the practical part points out the specific symbols of nationalism, dystopia, and totalitarianism and their relevance explained in relation to the context of the novel 1984 and Orwell's moralistic opinions.

Abstract:

Kniha 1984 je často chápána jako vize totalitní společnosti. Nicméně, tato bakalářská práce se snaží o vysvětlení toho, že by se kniha 1984 měla spíše chápat jako moralistické literární dílo, které bylo vytvořeno za účelem kritiky společnosti, ve které Orwell žil. Tato bakalářská práce také představí četné znaky nacionalismu, dystopie a totalitarismu, jakožto důvody úspěchu této knihy a následně také poukáže na způsob, kterým Orwell chtěl, aby byla tato kritika společnosti chápána. Dále tato bakalářská práce popisuje symboly nacionalismu, dystopie a totalitarismu, za účelem ukázání toho, že pomocí těchto témat chtěl Orwell poukázat na problémy společnosti ve které žil, a sice útlak ze strany vlády, nerovnost a uctívání autority. Každopádně, ještě, než se tato práce pustí do detailního popisu těchto jevů, jsou v teoretické části poskytnuty informace o Orwellových moralistických východiscích, společně s informacemi o Orwellově životě a stručnými definicemi nacionalismu, dystopie a totalitarismu. V následující praktické části jsou pak vysvětleny vybrané symboly nacionalismu, dystopie a totalitarismu ve vztahu ke kontextu knihy 1984 a Orwellovým moralistickým názorům.
