Multimedia transmissions in computer networks using open-source tools

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá implementaci technického řešení distribuce audiovizuálních dat (streamovaného obsahu) v konkrétní síti internetového poskytovatele. Hlavním cílem bylo sestavit funkční prototyp streamovacího serveru, který zajistí zpracování audiovizuálního obsahu pro nabízenou IPTV službu s několika tisíci zákazníky, a to s využitím dostupných open-source nástrojů. Teoretická část je zaměřena na problematiku multimediálních formátů, kontejnerů a popisuje vybrané doručovací metody šíření datových proudů v počítačových sítích. V praktické části bylo navrženo efektivní technické řešení využívající moderního způsobu akcelerovaného dekódování/enkódování formátů H.264 a HEVC na GPU (na architektuře CUDA). Popis funkčnosti a konfigurace jednotlivých klíčových součástí finálního řešení byl okomentován formou instalačního metodického návodu. Stěžejní přidanou hodnotu však představuje množství přiložených zpracovaných instalačních a konfiguračních skriptů, které celý postup zavádění zjednodušují a ve vysoké míře automatizují. Práce se též věnuje konkrétním možnostem optimalizace datové náročnosti síťového provozu (DiffServ, HLS/MBR) a zajištění vysoké dostupnosti a kvality IPTV služby. Pro proaktivní monitoring konkrétních parametrů byly doporučeny konkrétní dohledové nástroje a postupy, které se v dané implementaci osvědčily. Poslední kapitola se zabývá netechnickými aspekty provozu podobných služeb, a to zejména otázkami legislativními a přidává praktické poznatky a zkušenosti s jejich řešením. V závěru byl vyhodnocen dopad provedených změn na stávající řešení a byly formulovány závěry a doporučení pro provozovatele služby.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the implementation of a technical solution for the distribution of audiovisual data (streaming content) in a specific network of an Internet provider. The main goal was to build a functional prototype of the streaming server, which will provide the processing of audiovisual content for the IPTV service that is being offered for several thousand customers, using the available open-source tools. The theoretical part focuses on the introduction of multimedia formats, containers, and describes selected delivery methods of data streaming in computer networks. Selected open-source tools are also presented. In the practical part, I propose an effective technical solution using the modern method of accelerated decoding/encode of H.264 and HEVC formats on the GPU (on CUDA architecture). The description of the functionality and configuration of the individual key components of the final solution was commented on in the form of a methodological procedure of installation. However, the key added value is presented by the number of added installation and configuration scripts which simplify and highly automate the entire deployment process. The thesis also deals with specific possibilities of optimizing the data, the demands of network traffic (DiffServ, HLS/MBR), and ensuring high availability and quality of IPTV service. For the proactive monitoring of specific parameters, specific supervisory tools and procedures were recommended which proved successful in the given implementation. The last chapter deals with non-technical aspects of the operation of similar services, in particular legislative issues, and adds practical knowledge and experience in solving them. In the conclusion, the impact of the changes made on existing solutions was evaluated and conclusions and recommendations for the service operator were formulated.
