A Pictorial Turn and the linguistic turn in the work of William Blake

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na vztah obrazu a jazyka především ve vybraných dílech Williama Blakea. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí. První část se zabývá stručným popsáním obratu k jazyku a obratu k obrazu. Je také představena teorie zkoumání obou obratů na různých příkladech. Podkapitoly jsou věnovány metaobrazům a pojmu viditelného jazyka, které budou následně využity v druhé části práce. Druhá část se snaží o aplikaci zjištěných poznatků nejprve obecně na období romantismu a později také na konkrétní Blakeova díla, jako je Kniha Urizen, Kniha Los a Kniha Jób. Tato díla jsou následně profilována v kontextu obratu k jazyku a obratu k obrazu. V druhé části se také nachází podkapitola, která se věnuje srovnání Blakeova pojetí viditelného jazyka s tím prerafaelitským. Cílem bakalářské práce bylo prozkoumat vztah obrazu a textu v Blakeově díle a především možnosti verbální interpretace obrazového díla. Dalším cílem bylo alespoň částečně osvětlit tuto problematiku a pokud možno připravit půdu pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the relationship between picture and language in selected works by William Blake. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part will briefly describe linguistic turn and pictorial turn. The subchapters are focused on metapictures and the term of visible language. The subchapters also offer examples of works that help in understanding the topic. The second part of the thesis focuses on applying the findings, first broadly to the romantism era and later to specific works by Blake, such as The Book of Urizen, The Book of Los, and The Book of Job. There is also a subchapter focused on comparison of the Blake’s conception of the visible language and the Pre-Raphaelites conception of visible language. The main aim of the thesis is to examine the relationship between picture/painting and written text in Blake’s works, and especially to the possibility of a verbal interpretation of a visual work. Another aim of the thesis is to partially shed some light on this topic and to potentially lay down the groundwork for further research.
