Women and Silence in Contemporary Feminist Literary Fiction

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem umlčování žen v současné feministické literatuře. Zaměřuje se především na dvě literární díla a na literární strategie, jakými je motiv umlčování žen v těchto textech zpracován. Prvním textem je román The Silence of the Girls od Pat Barker, zatímco druhým je román Vox od americké lingvistky Christiny Dalcher. Při posuzování ticha jako ekvivalentu nebo paralely k jazyku je uplatňován sociolingvistický pohled. V bakalářské práci jsou popsány a nastíněny metody, které autorky používají, když přistupují k tichu jako k nástroji útlaku a/nebo formě sebevyjádření. Analyzovány jsou také dozvuky mlčení žen jako hlavních protagonistek literárních textů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the theme of silencing women in contemporary feminist literature. Mainly, it focuses on two literary works and on the literary strategies in which the motif of silence of women is handled within these texts. The first text is the novel The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker, whilst the second one is the novel Vox by American linguist Christina Dalcher. Sociolinguistic insight is applied when treating silence as an equivalent or a parallel to language. The Bachelor thesis describes and outlines the methods the authors use to approach silence as a tool of oppression and/or a form of self-expression. The aftermath of silence of women as main protagonists of the literary texts is analyzed.
