Role of the European Central Bank

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje Evropské centrální bance (ECB), respektive její roli, kterou hraje při udržování inflace na stabilní a nízké úrovni, což se jí také v letech 2007 a 2009 – 2010 dařilo. V teoretické rovině formování hospodářské a měnové unie a postavení ECB pojednávají první dvě kapitoly. Cílem práce je posouzení role ECB zejména s přihlédnutím k jejím úkolům v oblasti měnové a platební, proto se třetí kapitola mj. zaměřuje na zhodnocení činnosti ECB na příkladu světové finanční krize. V kapitole čtvrté je pojednáno o platebním systému TARGET. Závěrečná kapitola se věnuje vývoji vybraných ekonomických ukazatelů v době krize a na příkladu Řecka je ukázáno, jak se řešilo jeho zadlužení včetně reakcí čelních představitelů na tuto situaci, a dále je vyjádřena úvaha o budoucí existenci eurozóny.

Abstract:

This thesis is devoted to the European Central Bank (ECB) and the role it plays in keeping inflation on a stable and low level. The bank was able to successfully fulfil this role between 2007 and 2009 – 2010. On the theoretical level, the first two chapters of this thesis discuss the forming of an economic and monetary union, as well as the position of the European Central Bank. The aim of the thesis is to assess the role of the European Central Bank, primarily with regard to its tasks in the monetary and payment areas of the European Central Bank. The third chapter will focus, among other things, on assessing the activities of ECB using the example of the world financial crisis. The fourth chapter deals with the TARGET payment system. The final chapter will provide a case study of the development of selected economic indicators during the crisis, and the case study of Greece will show how its debt was handled, as well as how reacted to this situation. Considerations regarding the future existence of the Eurozone will also be examined.
