Experimental instruments in psychological laboratories at the turn of 19th and 20th century: classification and comparison

Abstract:

Zakladatelé psychologie prováděli experimenty za použití rozličných technicky pokročilých zařízení. Mnoho psychologických teorií vzniklo právě díky těmto přístrojům. Teoretická část práce se zabývá problémem datace, identifikace a determinace funkce historických přístrojů. Probrána je problematika vzniku raných psychologických laboratoří a finančních nákladů na pořízení rozličných instrumentů. Cílem empirické části bylo zjistit, zda jsou historické instrumenty ekvivalentní, ve smyslu dostatečné přesnosti, vzhledem k současným nástrojům. Prezentovaná studie zkoumá přesnost autentických historických instrumentů ve srovnání se současnou počítačovou technologií. Do studie byly zařazeny tři historické přístroje ze sbírky PSU FF MU: Ranschburgův mnemometr, tachistoskop a asociační zařízení. Bylo zjištěno, že v případě Ranschburgova mnemometru a tachistoskopu dosahují testované osoby horších výsledků v paměťovém testu než v případě použití počítače. Tento výsledek je způsoben nadměrným hlukem, který tato historická zařízení při svém provozu produkují. Asociační zařízení je při srovnání výsledků ekvivalentní vzhledem k odpovídající počítačové aplikaci.

Abstract:

Early psychologists conducted experiments using various devices that were technically very advanced. Many psychological theories were developed using them. The theoretical part deals with the problem of dating, identification and determination of their function; also the origin of early psychological laboratories and the financial demands acquisition of the instruments were discussed. The aim of the empirical part was to determine if historical instruments are equivalent, meaning sufficiently precise, to current psychological devices. The presented study explored the precision of the measurement of the authentic historical instruments in comparison to the contemporary advanced computerized devices. Three original instruments from the collection of the Institute of Psychology FF MU were examined: Ranschburg’s mnemometer, Tachistoskop and an association device. It was found that in case of Ranschburg’s mnemometr and Tachistoskop the mechanical nature of these instruments produced noisy and stressful test situation and therefore the tested persons reached lower scores on historical instruments than on computerized devices. Association device was found to be equivalent with its computerized counterpart.
