Biological effects of essential oils, curcuminoids and other components in Zingiberaceae plants

Abstract:

Zástupci čeledi zázvorovitých jsou již po staletí využívány v tradičních medicínách mnoha zemí světa. V posledních desetiletích je pozorován návrat k původním kořenům, který souvisí se zvyšujícím zájmem o přírodní látky, rostlinné přípravky a doplňky stravy jako možné prevence před chronickými nemocemi, jako jsou diabetes mellitus, kardiovaskulární a nádorová onemocnění, neurodegenerativní změny a gastrointestinální poruchy. S tímto zájmem narůstá i počet odborných studií a výzkumů zabývajících se tématem metabolitů rostlin a jejich biologickými aktivitami. Nejvýznamnějšími zástupci z hlediska biologických účinků jsou v čeledi zázvorovitých rostlin zázvorovník lékařský, kardamom obecný, aframom melegueta, galgán velký, kurkumovník dlouhý a kurkuma žlutokořenná. Za hlavní bioaktivní sloučeniny jsou označovány látky na bázi terpenových a fenolových sloučenin. Jedná se zejména o silice, gingeroly, shogaoly, paradoly a kurkuminoidy. Silice mají dle studií významné antioxidační, antibakteriální a insekticidní vlastnosti a v budoucnu by tak mohly být ekologickou náhradou larvicidů a repelentů. Gingeroly a jejich deriváty spolu s kurkuminoidy představují díky antioxidačním, protizánětlivým, protinádorovým vlastnostem velký potenciál nejen v léčbě rakoviny, ale i řady chronických onemocnění. Naději v léčbě současného koronavirového onemocnění přináší i recentní výzkumy popisující účinky proti viru SARS-CoV-2 gingerolu a kurkuminu.

Abstract:

The members of the ginger family have been used for centuries in the traditional medicines of many countries around the world. In recent decades, a return to indigenous roots has been observed, which is related to the increasing interest in natural substances, herbal preparations and dietary supplements as a possible prevention against chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular and cancer diseases, neurodegenerative changes and gastrointestinal disorders. In line with this interest, there is a growing number of scientific studies and research on the topic of plant metabolites and their biological activities. In the ginger family, the most important representatives in terms of biological effects are Zingiber officinale, Elettaria cardamomum, Aframomum melegueta, Alpinia galanga, Curcuma longa and Curcuma xanthorrhiza. The main bioactive compounds are terpene and phenolic compounds. These are mainly essential oils, gingerols, shogaols, paradols and curcuminoids. According to studies, essential oils have significant antioxidant, antibacterial and insecticidal properties and could thus be an ecological replacement for larvicides and repellents in the future. Gingerols and their derivatives, together with curcuminoids, have great potential in the treatment of cancer and many chronic diseases due to their antioxidant, antiinflammatory and anticancer properties. Recent studies describing the anti-SARS-CoV-2 effects of gingerol and curcumin also offer hope in the treatment of coronavirus disease.
