Perception strategies underlying affect evaluation of smiles

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa pokúša skrze dynamické podnety z UvA-NEMO databázy priniesť vyššiu ekologickú validitu výsledkov, využíva eye-tracking na určenie vizuálne-kognitívnych stratégii vnímania úsmevov a berie do úvahy rôzne prístupy k výskumu emocionálnych výrazov tváre. Rozpoznávanie emocionálnych výrazov je úloha silne založená na kontexte a existuje predpoklad, že sú používané rozdielne rozpoznávacie stratégie v úlohách, kde participanti majú rozlíšiť úsmev od výrazov iných emócii a v úlohách, kde participanti majú výhradne rozlíšiť medzi spontánnymi a strojenými úsmevmi. Rozpoznávanie úsmevov je pravdepodobne závislé aj od druhu úlohy a odlišné stratégie sú použité v závislosti od toho, či participanti rozhodujú, ktorá emócia je subjektom zobrazená alebo naopak cítená. Výsledky ukazujú, že oči sú väčšinou fixované ako prvé a počet fixácie na oči je väčší ako na ústa. Percepčná stratégia je čiastočne ovplyvnená kontextom (hlavne v prípade očí) a signifikantne ovplyvnená druhom úlohy (kategorizovanie emócie vs. hodnotenie emócie). Predpoklad, že pri strojených úsmevoch budú oči fixované častejšie sa nenaplnil, ale hypotéza nákladov spracovania strojených úsmevov bola potvrdená, kde fixácie na oči aj ústa boli dlhšie a participanti sa do oblastí očí vracali častejšie. Výsledky ukazujú nezhodu v autenticite očí a úst ako najdôležitejší faktor pre hodnotenie prežívanej emócie pri úsmevoch. Implikácia pre budúci výskum, leží hlavne v zdokonaľovaní databáz podnetov a v celostnom prístupe k úsmevom, ktorý by zahŕňal všetky jeho komponenty, vrátane dynamických.

Abstract:

This thesis attempts to provide a higher ecological validity to the research on smiles, using natural dynamic stimuli from the UvA–NEMO database and utilizing eye-tracking to determine visuo-cognitive strategies underpinning the perception of smiles, while taking into account different approaches to the facial expression research. Emotional facial expressions recognition is a task that can heavily depend on context cues, therefore there is an assumption that different perception strategies are used in tasks where participants are instructed to distinguish smiles from other facial expressions of different emotions, and where participants are specifically encouraged to judge spontaneity of a smile. Smile recognition is also presumed to be task dependent, with different perception strategies used to evaluate whether smiles are felt or just shown. Results suggest, that eyes are fixated first and more frequently, compared to the mouth. The perception strategy is slightly influenced by the context (especially for eyes) and significantly by the task (emotion categorization vs. affect evaluation). The assumption that eyes are fixated more for non-enjoyment smiles was not confirmed, while significant results for higher processing cost of non-enjoyment smiles (longer fixations and more revisits) were found. These findings imply that eye-mouth incongruence may be the most important factor when evaluating affect in smiles. Current results have implications for the development of future research, where a more holistic approach to the perception of smiles should be taken into account and the need for ecologically valid stimuli annotated for all of the morphological and dynamic features is obvious.
